1. ‘Obidient’ Nigerians don’t want PDP, APC, says Obaseki
Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has raised the alarm about the impact of the ‘Obidient’ movement on the chances of the ruling All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party at the 2023 presidency elections.
The ‘Obidient’ movement refers to the supporters of the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi.
In a video published by the AIT, which has now gone viral, Obaseki noted that youths in Nigeria no longer want APC and PDP.

2. Meet Supreme Court justices’ demands, lawyers urge CJN
Some lawyers have expressed dismay at the petition written by the 14 justices of the Supreme Court against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Muhammad Tanko, alleging misappropriation of funds.
The PUNCH had reported that the justices of the apex court, in a joint petition, accused the CJN of poor welfare, among other ill-treatment being meted out to them.
In the leaked petition, the 14 justices of the apex court had accused the CJN of abandoning his responsibilities and diverting funds meant for the running of the Supreme Court.
However, the CJN denied the allegations noting that the Supreme Court justices were provided with SUV vehicles, cars, and accommodation.
3. Bauchi lawmaker, ex-deputy gov, others dump APC
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Halliru Jika, representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, has dumped the All Progressives Congress, under whose umbrella he was elected to the Upper Chamber.
Jika, a former House of Representatives contested the APC governorship primary election but came second with 278 votes, losing to a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who got 370 votes.
The lawmaker made his position known in a letter addressed to the Chairman of APC in Kafin Madaki Ward, Ganjuwa local government and dated 16th June 2022, titled, ‘Resignation of membership of All Progressives Congress Party’, and obtained by our correspondent.
He said, “I humbly write to appreciate the leadership of the All Progressive Congress for the opportunity given to me to participate in the just concluded Governorship Primaries Election held on the 26 of May 2022.
“Based on the aforementioned and due consultation with political associates, promptings from my teaming supporters including women and youths, I wish to notify you of my resignation as a Member of the Party with immediate effect.”
This is coming days after Hon. Farouk Mustapha, who also recently contested for the 2023 Bauchi APC governorship primary but lost, dumped the party.

4. NGE, NPAN, NUJ, other stakeholders insist on self-regulatory framework
Media stakeholders yesterday said that a media regulatory framework led and driven by media professionals represents the most effective guarantee of media freedom and the independence of the media, in line with with regional and international norms and standards.
The stakeholders, comprising representatives of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Media Rights Agenda (MRA) and the International Press Centre (IPC), as well as media managers met in Lagos on Tuesday, at a one-day strategic meeting of media stakeholders to deliberate on a framework for Media regulation in Nigeria.
The meeting, which was supported by the United States of American Embassy in Nigeria, was convened by the NGE in continuation of an ongoing initiative, which includes a series of town-hall meetings and capacity-building workshops for editors in Nigeria also restated the commitment of media stakeholders to defend freedom of expression, media freedom and independence as well as the public’s right to know.
In a communique issued at the end of the meeting and signed by Mustapha Isah, the President, NGE; Feyi Smith, the Executive Secretary of NPAN; Chris Isiguzo, the President of NUJ; Edetaen Ojo, the Executive Director of MRA, and Lanre Arogundade, the Executive Director of IPC, the participants therefore resolved to pursue a self-regulatory framework to ensure improved standards in the Nigerian media, as well as to protect the media sector from interference, control and repression by government.
5. Minimum alcohol pricing can protect heavy drinkers, reduce harm
A minimum unit price (MUP) of 50p (0.61 dollars) per unit was introduced in May 2018 in Scotland, while Wales brought in the same measure in March 2020.
In England, the government said there were no plans to introduce a minimum price, though it was keeping the issue under review.
Research from Newcastle University and published in the Lancet medical journal in 2021 found that alcohol sales fell by almost 8 per cent after the policy was introduced in Scotland.
In its new study, the WHO office for Europe said alcohol was responsible for almost one million deaths in the region each year.
6. Buhari asks US, UK to ban IPOB, says Biafran group ‘behind pipeline vandalism’
AMIDST calls by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank and other leading economists for the removal of fuel subsidy, President Muhammadu Buhari has made it clear that his government has no intention to heed to such calls which could increase hardship on the citizenry.
The President has also attributed Nigeria’s inability to meet it’s OPEC quota in crude production to the alleged criminal activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in oil producing region, saying that the group is complicit in damage to pipelines and infrastructure.
He also urged international partners to take steps by proscribing IPOB as a terrorist organization, lamenting that the leadership of the group enjoys safe haven in the West, broadcasting hate speech into Nigeria from London, spending millions lobbying members of the US Congress, and freely using international financial networks to arm agitators on the ground.
These were contained in an interview the President granted Bloomberg News recently with the transcripts made available to newsmen by his media office.

7. Niger IPMAN shuts fuel stations over fuel attendant’s death
The Niger chapter of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has shut all fuel stations across the Minna metropolis over the killing of a fuel attendant by a soldier.
The soldier, who is said to belong to the Nigerian Air Force, shot the fuel Attendant identified as Abdulkareem when he tried to intervene in a quarrel between him and the manager.
The soldier, who felt affronted by the audacity of the fuel attendant, reportedly shot Abdulkareem, who was confirmed dead at the Minna General Hospital.
Niger IPMAN chairman Adamu Erena lamented how security agencies have been flexing muscles and threatening staff at filling stations.
8. Portable needs rehabilitation, says Okowa’s aide
An aide of Delta Governor, Ossai Success has advised controversial artist, Habeeb Okikiola aka Portable to undergo alcohol and drug rehabilitation.
He was reacting to a video where the artist masterminded the beating of a former friend for sending a message to his wife.
On his verified Facebook page, Success said: “Take Portable to alcohol and drug rehabilitation centre. As a young boy, I love Zazu singer Portable’s zeal for defeating poverty but the truth must be told.

9. Bandits kill 3, injure one, abduct married woman in Katsina
Bandits reportedly killed three villagers and abducted a married woman from Bakiyawa village in Batagarawa Local Government Area of Katsina State.
DAILY POST gathered that the villagers were killed by heavily armed bandits, numbering about 15, who stormed the community on Tuesday around 4pm riding on motorcycles.
According to a source from the community, the hoodlums also shot one Usman Habibu of Ungwan Tantagaria in the same neighbourhood on the leg, who is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Marwan Zayyana, a resident of the community said: “The hoodlums, armed with AK-47 rifles, started their operation from Ungwan Tsugune in Bakiyawa where they killed Sadiq Lawal inside his compound.
“They proceeded to Ungwan Jageme where they also killed one Abubakar Musa right in front of his house. The third victim, Aminu Abdulwahab, was killed on his farmland while trying to escape from the marauding bandits.”
10. Buhari reveals plans to resolve collapse of national grid
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said his administration is decentralising the nation’s national grid through renewable mini-grids to address the challenges of electricity supply across the country.
Buhari said this during an interview with Bloomberg News, adding that his Government had earmarked 550 million dollars to provide 20,000 Standalone Solar Systems (SHS), as well as Solar Hybrid mini-grids in over 250 locations in the country.
DAILY POST recalls that power outages had become a frequent trend in Nigeria for the past few weeks, following the collapse of the national grid.
The situation had also been compounded with an increase in diesel, an alternative source of energy by most households and production firms, a development that has also resulted in a hike in goods and services.
