1. Impeachment: Deputy gov drags Oyo Assembly to court

The Oyo State Deputy Governor, Rauf Olaniyan, has dragged the State House of Assembly to court over the impeachment move against him by the lawmakers.

The deputy governor was represented in court by his counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, in the case which came up before Justice Ladiran Akintola at the Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan, on Tuesday.

The judge ordered that the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, and the Clerk of the House be put on notice before he adjourned the matter to Wednesday.

The lawmakers had, two weeks ago, initiated an impeachment move against Olaniyan.

2. Insecurity: Katsina CP holds closed-door meeting with council chairmen

The Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Idris Dabban, on Tuesday, held a closed-door meeting with chairmen and community leaders from four Local Government Areas in the state over the security challenges they face.

The councils are Jibia, Batsari, Batagarawa, and Kurfi.

The meeting took place in Katsina, the state capital, and lasted over three hours.

The Commissioner told journalists shortly before the meeting started at about 11am that it (the meeting) was about security generally, although he did not elaborate.

3. Denying Nnamdi Kanu bail, gross injustice against humanity – Group

The Coalition of South-East Youth Leaders says it is displeased with the verdict of Justice Binta Njako of the Federal High Court, who denied a bail application for the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The President-General of the group, Goodluck Ibem, made this known in a statement on Tuesday.

He likened Nyako’s verdict to a statement made by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) at the recently-held 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Ibem said, “The verdict of Justice Binta Njako is the same statement made by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday 23 June, 2022 during a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Boris Johnson, at the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, where the President Buhari told PM Johnson, ‘Remember he jumped bail before. How are we sure he won’t do it again if he’s admitted to bail?’

4. 2023: INEC unveils Ebonyi PDP NASS candidates

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has published the successful candidates in the line-up of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Governorship candidate in Ebonyi state, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, who emerged during the Party’s Primaries of 28th and 29th of May, 2022.

Disclosing this in a statement, the Director of Media and Publicity, AnyiChuks Campaign Organization, Chief Abia Onyike, stated that those that emerged on the latest INEC’s list were those that “their Primary Election was the one monitored by INEC and was adopted by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP as the authentic PDP primary election in Ebonyi state.”

Onyike called on members and leaders of the Party in the State to be united and focused as the Party was prepared to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, in the State.

According to the statement: “The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) has published the names of Ebonyi State PDP candidates for the 2023 General Elections.

5. Death of Father ODIA: Perpetrators should be brought to book – Senator Alimikhena

The lawmaker representing Edo North Senatorial District, Senator Francis Alimikhena, on Tuesday, urged security operatives to go after those who kidnapped and killed Rev Father Christopher Odia and bring them to book.

Senator Alimkhena, in a condolence message, described Odia’s death as shocking adding that those behind the killing have “incurred God’s wrath.”

The lawmaker said: “I received the news of the death of Rev. Father ODIA with shock. A very painful death at a time he is needed most.

7. Woman missing after torture by DPO, policemen

A mother of two Blessing Mba and her children have been missing after a Divisional Police Officer(DPO) and other officers brutalised her in Iwo local government area of Osun State.

The Nation gathered she was brutalised when she went to Adeke station in Iwo to secure the release of one of her detained sons.

An officer was said to have accused her of carrying fetish sacrifice to the station to ensure the release of her son, Monday.

8. Okowa names four commissioner nominees

Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Tuesday forwarded the names of four commissioner nominees to the House of Assembly for possible screening and confirmation.

The names were contained in a letter to the Assembly which was read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori.

The nominees are: Mr Samuel Mariere, Mr Sunda Onoriode, Chief Mike Okah and Chief Godspower Asiuwhu.

During the sitting, the House also received two separate letters of nomination into the State Board of Internal Revenue and Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC).

9. Rep Chinedu Ogah recounts ordeals in detention, tasks inmates to embrace change

A member of the Federal House of Representatives, Mr Chinedu Ogah, representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency, on Tuesday, recounted his ordeals in prison in Ebonyi State.

Ogah, who addressed over 1000 inmates at the Abakaliki Correctional Centre, said he was detained for over six months for a crime he never committed.

He tasked the inmates to be hopeful that they will soon return to their various homes and reunite with their family members.

The lawmaker, who visited Afikpo and Abakaliki Correctional Centre to donate cash, food items to inmates, said: “Your being here doesn’t mean that your own life has ended. It is a moment of trials. It is for you to redefine your future. It is for you to mend your ways because if you are outside here, you would have been a dead person.

10. Moghalu kicks as Buhari confers GCON award on ex-CJN, Tanko Muhammad

Former African Democratic Party (ADC) presidential aspirant, Kingsley Moghalu, has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari for conferring the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on the immediate past Chief Justices of Nigeria, CJN, Ibrahim Tanko.

Buhari had during the swearing-in of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as Acting Chief Judge of Nigeria at the State House, conferred the second-highest national honour that can be bestowed on any Nigerian national on Tanko.

He said the award was being conferred on the jurist for the good work he did while at the saddle as CJN.

But reacting, Moghalu on his Twitter page, said Tanko’s tenure was spectacularly undistinguished.
