1. Presidency knocks Northern Elders Forum over secession comments
The Presidency, on Tuesday, slammed the Northern Elders Forum for what it called “delusional arrogance” over its call for some section of the country to secede.
According to a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the Presidency insisted that only democratically elected leadership can take decisions that steer the nation, and no one else.
The statement is titled ‘Statement on the call by “northern elders forum” asking a section of the country to leave the federation.’
It read in part, “We are aware of the latest statement from the so-called ‘Northern Elders Forum’.
2. We must ensure Nigeria works for all, says Osinbajo
The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday in Abuja said it is pertinent on leadership to build a nation that works for all Nigerians regardless of their region.
This is as he said such society must be peaceful, secure, founded on law, order and the rule of law; and one that enables commerce and values productivity to ensure large and small businesses can grow.
According to a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Osinbajo spoke when he was formally honoured with the award for Leadership Person of the Year 2021 at the Leadership Newspapers’ Annual Conference and Awards ceremony which held on Tuesday at the International Conference Centre, in Abuja.
The statement is titled ‘Why we must create a country that works for us all, by Osinbajo’.
3. 3,000 aspirants scramble for APC tickets in state assemblies
Chairman of Kebbi screening committee, Osita Okechukwu, announced on Tuesday that 3,000 States House of Assembly aspirants will be screened nationwide to decide who will clinch the All Progressive Congress’ tickets ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Okechukwu disclosed this at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, venue of the screening for States House of Assembly aspirants.
The Director-General of Voice of Nigeria added that his new assignment is targeted at building a foundation for the new leadership of the country that will emanate from the candidates of the various political parties.
He said, “In our own instance in the All Progressives Congress, we are going to screen those we think are qualified to run for the House of assembly.

4. Alleged corruption/extortion of soldiers misguided, untrue – Army HQ
The Nigerian Army on Tuesday declared that allegations by some faceless aggrieved personnel claiming the salaries and allowances of soldiers were being tampered with by the top brass of the force and for this, soldiers have threatened to embark on strike action as “vague and an attempt at causing disaffection among personnel”
The Army said it will not be deterred by any unpatriotic attempt, aimed at dwindling the morale of her personnel noting however that, “It is weird, that personnel of the NA, whose morale is considerably high under the command of the incumbent Chief of Army Staff, will make such allegations and threat, given the prioritised and prompt attention accorded soldiers’ welfare, including timely payment of their salaries and allowances by the current administration.
A statement to this effect and titled, “Allegations of Soldiers Being Shortchanged, Misguided, Untrue” was signed by the Director of Public Relations, Brig Gen Onyema Nwachukwu.
5. 2023: INEC cautions political parties against non-transparent primaries
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday cautioned political parties against non-transparent primaries in order to sustain Nigeria’s democracy.
Alhaji Yahaya Bello , FCT INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner(REC) made the call at the Stakeholders Interactive Session in Respect of the Forthcoming Political Party Congresses and Primaries in Abuja.
According to Bello, the call became imperative because a good and credible election begins with a transparent and credible part primaries crowned with internal democracy.
He recalled that during the just concluded FCT Area Council Election, the results of some primaries conducted were very seriously contested and challenged in litigations that went all the way to the Supreme Court.
6. Ritual killing: Police arrest murder suspect in Oyo town
A 29-year old Alfa Tiamiyu Abass residing in Oyo town, Atiba Local Government area of Oyo State has been arrested by the state Police command for allegedly murdering a 25-year old Barakat for ritual killing.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing newsmen on the activities of the command.
She said Alfa Abass had confessed to have killed the victim who happened to be his customer.
Onadeko said: “On 15th May, 2022 at about 1830hrs, one Oyerinde Gbadegein ‘m’ reported at Atiba Divisional Police Headquarters that about 1300hrs of the same day, a corpse was seen dumped by the side of a stream at Jibola Afonja street Oyo town.

7. NSCDC arrests two suspects, rescue four victims of trafficking in Ilorin
Kwara Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two women, Gift Rita, 37 and Joy Samuel, 37, over alleged child trafficking in Ilorin.
The State Commandant, Makinde Ayinla, said that one of the suspects, Joy Samuel, was arrested on May 11 at a motor park with four girls as they arrived in Ilorin.
Ayinla revealed that the suspect was arrested based on intelligence report on her involvement in child trafficking.
The Commandant said that during interrogation, Joy confessed to have received the girls in Ilorin, to assist her friend who lived in Port Harcourt and specialised in human trafficking.
He said that investigation conducted revealed that the prime suspect, Gift Rita, would be in Ilorin after few days of the girls’ arrival, to hand them over to male customers.
The commandant said the prime suspect arrived in Ilorin on May 16, at about 10 p. m and was arrested at the car park.
8. Buhari to unveil new NNPC Ltd July 18 – Kyari
The new Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPC Ltd.) will be unveiled by President Muhammadu Buhari on July 18, 2022.
The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Malam Mele Kyari, said this on Tuesday while receiving the CEO of the Year 2021 Award of the Leadership Newspapers Group in Abuja.
The Leadership Annual Conference and Awards also saw Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala receive the Leadership Person of the Year Awards.

9. 2023: Adamu Garba picks YPP presidential form, says Nigeria has no future in APC, PDP
Adamu Garba, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, who abandoned the party over the cost of its nomination forms, has purchased a presidential expression of interest form of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
The presidential hopeful, who declared his intention to run for president under the YPP, one week after he left the APC, told journalists on Tuesday that he was worried over a situation where over 200 million Nigerians cannot feed themselves.
Garba warned Nigerian youths that there was no future for them in either the APC or the PDP, calling for a mass exodus from the parties he described as a box for Nigerian youths.
He warned that young people have been boxed into a corner in the two popular parties, insisting that the future of Nigeria lies with the YPP.
Garba also decried the spate of corruption in the country, citing the recent arrest of the Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris by the EFCC.
10. Sweden signs application to join NATO despite Turkey’s warning
Sweden has signed an application declaring it wants to join NATO.
This is despite a strong opposition from Turkey and disagreement with Russia over the move.
Signing the application is a formal step by Stockholm toward joining the military alliance.
The signing also ended years of military neutrality and this move, according to Swedish, became imperative following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“It feels very big, very serious, and it feels like we have arrived at a conclusion which is the best for Sweden,” Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said on Tuesday after signing the application.
