1. NITDA bill not to regulate telecoms business – NITDA
The National Information Technology Development Agency has disclosed that the agency does not seek to regulate telecoms business, but regulate Information Technology for development.
This disclosure was made by the spokesperson, NITDA, Mrs Hadiza Umar, who further explained that as a result, telecommunications operators would be excluded from the NITDA Bill currently being debated at the National Assembly.
Umar better clarified this position in an interview with The PUNCH while reacting to the telecommunications operators’ agitation, seeking exclusion from the regulation under the planned NITDA Bill.
The NITDA bill seeks to introduce a licensing regime for operators in the Information Technology Industry and Digital Economy. The Bill empowers the Agency to issue regulations that provide for licensing and authorisation criteria, including renewal, suspension, and revocation conditions to promote free market operation and competition, among other things within the sector, Deal Solicitor explained.
2. Adamawa gov hails suspended REC’s arrest
The Governor of Adamawa State, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, has welcomed the arrest of the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner of Adamawa State, Yunusa Hudu-Ari, by the police.
The government said it welcomed the development, noting it remained an important first step in upholding the rule of law.
Governor Fintiri, who spoke through his Director General of Media and Communications, Government House Yola, Solomon Kumangar, also asked the authorities concerned to ensure diligent prosecution of the case to its logical conclusion.
3. NGX halts seven-day rally with N58bn loss
The market capitalisation of the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Tuesday shed N58bn to close at N28.475tn halting a seven-day rally.
Similarly, the All-Share Index of the NGX dropped 107.03 base points to close at 52,296.48 on the back of selloffs in Wapco (-1.66 per cent), Geregu (- 10.00 per cent) and ETI (-0.90 per cent) shares respectively.
A total of 550,293,697 million units of shares valued at N5.150bn were traded on the local bourse in 6, 250 deals. This trade turnover is lower relative to the previous session, with the value of transactions down by 60.59 per cent.

4. Abia deputy speaker impeached hours after presiding over speaker’s impeachment
The confusion and supremacy battle in the Abia State House of Assembly Tuesday, got messier as the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu, has been impeached hours after presiding over the purported impeachment of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji.
Uchendu had earlier in the day, according to a viral video, presided over the impeachment of Orji at an undisclosed location in Umuahia suspected to be Emeka Omeruo Government Guest House.
The lawmakers who met at the location elected Hon. Chukwudi Apugo representing Umuahia East state constituency as the new Speaker.
5. Iwuanyanwu warns against trading with Ohanaeze’s name
Newly elected President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has warned Igbo youths and other unauthorized persons against using the body’s name for financial gains
to stop forthwith.
Iwuanyanwu gave the warning Monday at a press conference at the end of the maiden National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of Ohanaeze under his leadership held at its headquarters in Enugu.
He also urged media houses in the country to stop patronizing the fake individuals who use the name of the apex Igbo socio-cultural body for their selfish interest, or they would be ready for litigations.
Iwuanyanwu expressed sadness that some Igbo youths, in the name of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youths, had caused a lot of embarrassment for Ndigbo in general and Ohanaeze Ndigbo in particular.
6. One shot, 7 others flee as communities clash in Delta
There is palpable tension in riverine communities of Delta State as one person has been shot with severe bullet wounds while seven others fled unhurt when indigenes of the Alota community in Ughelli South local government area attacked fishermen from the neighbouring Oboro community in Burutu local government area of the state.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has created palpable tension in both riverine Ijaw and Urhobo communities in the area.
It could be recalled that inter-communal crisis between these two Ijaw and Urhobo communities had caused untold hardship in the area in the mid 1990s, after which incident the infamous Warri crisis erupted.
