1. Insurgency: UN seeks international support for humanitarian action in Borno
The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has urged the international community to support humanitarian action in Borno State, currently recovering from insurgency.
Guterres made the call on Tuesday in Maiduguri while rounding off his visit to the state where he interacted with displaced persons, repentant Boko-Haram members, and government officials led by Governor Babagana Zulum.
“I want to congratulate the Governor for what I see today.
“I want to strongly appeal to the international community to understand Borno as a state of hope, to support humanitarian action in Borno, to recognise the enormous challenges that Borno faces with climate change and Boko Haram activities, and to invest in Borno of hope.
2. Pictorial: UN chief visits Borno, meets Zulum
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, is on a two-day visit to Borno State in Northern Nigeria.
During his visit on Tuesday, the UN chief met with the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum.
Pictures of the visit shared by the state government, were made available to The PUNCH on Tuesday.
3. Liverpool beat Villarreal to reach the Champions League final
Liverpool came from two goals down to beat Villarreal 3-2 in Spain on Tuesday and advance to their third Champions League final in five years with a 5-2 aggregate victory.
Villarreal led 2-0 at half-time with goals by Boulaye Dia and Francis Coquelin levelling the tie on aggregate, but Fabinho, Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane all scored in the second half for Liverpool before the hosts had Etienne Capoue sent off.
Liverpool, six-time European champions, will play either Manchester City or Real Madrid in the final in Paris on May 28.

4. World Press Freedom Day: Ortom calls for aiding of journalism practice in Nigeria
Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has urged the Federal Government to consider subsidies and import waivers for media materials and equipment to aid and support journalism practice in the country.
The Governor who also commended the courage and resilience of the Nigerian Press in the sustenance and promotion of the tenets of democracy despite operating in a harsh environment urged the media to remain steadfast.
In a goodwill message Tuesday in Makurdi by his Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur to commemorate this year’s World Press Freedom Day, Governor Ortom said credit must be given to the Press for the enduring democracy and its resilience in the face of daunting challenges to continue to inform, educate and entertain the populace.
5. Banditry: COAS performs ground breaking ceremony for new Forward Operations Base in Sokoto
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya on Tuesday 3 May 2022 performed the groundbreaking ceremony for establishment and construction of new Forward Operations Base (FOB) Isa, in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The ground breaking ceremony took place during the COAS’ operational tour of Operation Hadarin Daji in the North West, to evaluate ongoing anti banditary operations in the zone.
Speaking at the event, Gen Yahaya stated that the initiative to build the new FOB Isa in the eastern region of Sokoto state is premised on its strategic importance to the ongoing operations. He pointed out, that the FOB will facilitate the planning and execution of several operations.
6. LAWMA warns against attacks on its personnel
Managing Director, Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, Ibrahim Odumboni has warned citizens to desist from the habit of unleashing unprovoked attacks and harassment on the authority’s personnel, saying anyone caught will be prosecuted.
Odunmboni gave the warning on Tuesday, following recent attack on one of LAWMA staff by a miscreant while on duty.
The victim had since been rushed to hospital for intensive medical care.
Speaking on the incident, Odumboni, condemned the act and warned that the attack would not be condoned by the state government.

7. MKO Abiola’s son urges Buhari to investigate father’s death
Mr Abdul Abiola, one of the sons of the late Chief MKO Abiola has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of his father.
The young Abiola said this via his Twitter handle @AbdulMKO on Tuesday.
He said that it was time for Nigerians to know the truth as to the circumstances that led to the death of his father, adding that the President should look into the archives.
8. IGP upgrades police criminal database, forensic investigation
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Baba, has ordered effective upgrade and relaunch of the Nigeria Police Crime and Incident Database (NPC & IDB) Centre for providing additional aid to police operatives in acquiring credible electronic criminal databases.
IGP said the development will further support investigations and strategic operational and tactical planning which would, in turn, facilitate easy identification of suspects, crime location, modus operandi, Global Positioning System (GPS) to geolocate crimes, amongst others.
The upgrade of the Nigeria Police Crime and Incident Database, which was commissioned by the President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2020, he said has become imperative in view of the sophistication of criminals, who now apply technology to perpetuate their nefarious activities.

9. Niger Joint security team repel attack in Niger community, kill 10 terrorists
The Niger State Joint Security team has allegedly neutralized no fewer than ten bandits and rescued fourteen persons at Kawo, Uregi villages in Rafi local government area of the state.
The incident occurred on Monday at about 5 pm during the Sallah festivities in the area.
Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner, Ministry for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Internal Security, Emmanuel Bagna Umar in Minna said the terrorists and armed bandits on motorcycles attempted to attack Kawo, Uregi villages in Rafi LGA to disrupt the Sallah celebration but were repelled by the security personnel in the State.
According to him,” on the receipt of this information, joint security tactical teams responded swiftly and mobilised to the area where the hoodlums were engaged around Uregi, Kiribo villages and as a result, about ten among bandits were neutralized, 14 kidnapped citizens rescued and seven motorcycles recovered with arms from them.
10. Lassa fever: Expert urges FG, states to recruit more health inspectors
Prof. Tanimola Akande has urged federal and state governments to increase the number of environmental health inspectors to reduce the spread of Lassa fever.
The former President of Association of Public Health Physicians spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.
The expert said the incidence of Lassa fever in most states was worrisome and required concerted efforts.
Akande noted that inadequate health officials were not good for the country’s size.
