1. Nigerians to benefit from EU scholarship – Envoy

In its continuous bid to expand higher education opportunities available to young Nigerian graduates, the European Union on Tuesday noted that it was calling for applications for the 2023 Erasmus plus postgraduate scholarship programme.

The PUNCH reports that the Erasmus plus is the EU’s flagship programme for education, training, youth and sport, which offers beneficiaries scholarships to study in some of the most prestigious universities within and outside Europe. It also enables youths, students, staff and higher education institutes to study or work with European Higher Education Institutions.

In a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja by the union on Tuesday, it was noted that the programme would provide young Nigerians with education, skills and competence needed to thrive in global economy.

The statement partly read, “The Erasmus+ programme provides beneficiaries with opportunities for mobility and cooperation with partner countries beyond Europe, focusing on its qualitative impact and contributing to more inclusive and cohesive, greener and digitally fit societies. Furthermore, through the programme, young Nigerians will be equipped with the education, skills and competences they need to thrive in a globalised economy, hence, contributing to nation-building.

2. Tribunal: Adeleke’s certificates not in Osun – Electoral commissioner

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osun State, Dr Mutiu Agboke, says the commission is no longer in possession of Senator Ademola Adeleke’s Form CF 001 used in the 2018 governorship election.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalled that the tribunal had earlier granted subpoena application to the petitioners, compelling the REC to produce Adeleke’s Form CF 001.

Form CF 001 is the nomination form and all its attachments, including the certificates used in the 2018 election.

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and the All Progressives Congress had on August 5 submitted a petition before the tribunal in Osogbo.

3. Mark Zuckerberg not resigning, META debunks rumours

META has described as “false” rumours that the company’s billionaire CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is planning to step down.

According to Daily Mail UK, insiders leaked that the 38-year-old had decided to step down as the head of META, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

They said the decision “will not affect” the Metaverse, Zuckerberg’s multi-billion dollar virtual reality project that has lost the company at least $30 billion.

On Tuesday however, Andy Stone, a communications official for the company, tweeted that the rumours were false. He simply tweeted, “This is false.”

5. 2023 polls: Market leaders declare support for Sanwo-Olu, APC

Leadership of markets and communities across Lagos, under the aegis of Association of Commodity Market Women and Men of Nigeria, on Tuesday, declared support for the second term bid of the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat and candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the 2023 general elections.

The leadership made the declaration when they met Sanwo-Olu, at a special meeting, held at the Alausa residence of their President-General, Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo.

It was the second time in three months Sanwo-Olu would be meeting with the market leaders. The Governor was accompanied by his deputy, Hamzat, Special Adviser on Local Government and Community Affairs, Bolaji Roberts, APC, State chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, and Director General of the APC Governorship Campaign Council, Senator Ganiyu Solomon.

5. COP 27: APC National youth leader urges commitment to climate financing

APC National Youth Leader, Hon. Dayo Isreal, has tasked the global north, including Europe and America, on the need to show serious commitment to climate funding obligations in Africa if the continent must meet the goals set on emissions and other actions identified to address the problem of the harmful increase in the temperature of the planet.

He issued the challenge during a session at the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 27) in Egpyt.

Stressing the grave danger of ignoring the challenge of climate change to protect the future of young people and achieve sustainable development, Isreal said: “Africa, including my home country, Nigeria, has contributed so little to this problem, but we are left to bear the worst brunt. We are witnessing record droughts, flooding, and other environmental disasters all linked to the warming climate.”

“On top of that, we are asked to sacrifice growth opportunities and neglect satisfying pressing national needs in the interest of the planet even if those making the demand, the same people with a more significant share of responsibility for the problem, are dodging their obligations, especially financing the gaps the shifts they are demanding will cause.”

6. Nigerians with expired passport can return home – NIS

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Tuesday said that Nigerians in diaspora with expired passport would no longer require visas to visit home.

The Service, however, stated that they must show their expired Nigeria’s passport to ensure they were truly from Nigeria.

Mr Tony Akuneme, the NIS Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in an interview with Newsmen in Abuja.

Akuneme was reacting to inquiries about the new visa policy of the Federal Government which said that Nigerians with dual citizenship don’t need visa to visit home.

7. Atiku wades in as Ihedioha, Anyanwu split Imo PDP over ticket

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has mandated the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar to wade into the ongoing crisis in the PDP Imo chapter.

A former Imo Governor, Emeka Ihedioha and the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, are at war over who controls the party structure in the state.

Ihedioha and Anyanwu are battling for the Imo PDP governorship ticket ahead of the off-season poll coming up in November 2023.

While Ihedioha is one of the strong pillars in the Atiku camp, Anyanwu is loyal to the camp of the Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike.

8. UPDATED: Atiku humiliated Jonathan in 2015, Wike alleges

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has alleged the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar mounted pressure on former President Goodluck Jonathan to relinquish the 2015 presidential ticket of the party.

Wike said Atiku embarrassed and humiliated Jonathan, who as a sitting President and candidate visited him in Donchester Hotel, London to beg him to return to the party to support his second term bid.

The Governor spoke on Tuesday when he led his Ebonyi counterpart, Dave Umahi, to inaugurate the Akpabu-Omudioga-Egbeda Road constructed by his administration.

He said: “What I don’t like is that we forget history easily. In 2015 when Jonathan as a sitting President won his primaries, Jonathan went to London in Donchester Hotel to plead with this our presidential candidate today, Atiku Abubakar, say ‘please my brother come back to the party and support me’.

9. Oil theft: Nigeria loses $2bn in eight months – Senate reveals

The Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday, disclosed that the country had lost $2 billion to oil theft within eight months.

The red chamber’s ad-hoc committee revealed this following its investigations on oil theft covering January to August this year.

The upper legislative house failed to indict specifically any individual or corporate entity for the alleged economic sabotage ravaging the country.

Also, the Senate at plenary has adopted the committee’s report as presented by its chairman, Senator Albert Akpan Bassey but said it had impacted far-reaching recommendations in stemming the tide.

10. EPL: Rio Ferdinand reacts as Man Utd terminate Ronaldo’s contract

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has reacted to news that the club has terminated Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract.

The Red Devils confirmed the news on Tuesday evening.

The Premier League champions were forced to tear up Ronaldo’s deal following his two-part bombshell interview with Piers Morgan last week.
