1. Reps summon FIRS boss, demand NNPC’s tax records

The House of Representatives’ Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate the Structure & Accountability of the Joint Venture Businesses and Production Sharing Contracts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation from 1990 has summoned the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Muhammad Nani.

This is just as the committee asked the FIRS to provide all tax records and other relevant documents on all the JVs and PSCs of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (now Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited) from 1990 to date.

 Two officials, Ogunyemilusi Gabriel and Bello Rasheed appeared before the committee at the continued investigative hearing in Abuja on Tuesday, while various oil companies invited by the panel failed to show up.

 The FIRS’ representatives told the lawmakers that the relevant tax documents demanded by the committee had been submitted, though they covered only 2015 to 2021.

2. FG loses suit to extradite businessman to US

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday struck out a suit instituted by the Federal Government of Nigeria, seeking to extradite a Nigerian citizen, Andrew Chidiebere Ibe, to the United States of America for trial in wired fraud charges.

The case filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN), on behalf of the Federal Government was struck out for a want of diligent prosecution.

Justice Inyang Ekwo threw out the case following the repeated absence of the AGF or any legal practitioner from his office or private chamber to appear in court to prosecute the Extradition Suit.

Malami in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/456/2022 requested the Federal High Court for an order permitting the surrendering of the Nigerian businessman to America following his indictment for wired fraud.

3. IKEDC drags Lagos residents to court, two remanded

The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company has reportedly dragged residents of the Oko-Oba area of Lagos State to court over issues that emanated from the residents’ resistance to alleged estimated billing.

Two residents of the community, Imam Fatai Shaheed and Odewale Jamiu, according to their counsel, Lawrence Irabor, were charged with four counts, “bordering on conducts likely to cause breach of peace, conspiracy to obstruct personnel of the IKEDC to carry out their duty, and assault,” at the Samuel Ilori Court House, Ogba.

The lawyer said the two were granted bail, however, efforts to perfect their bail conditions couldn’t be completed on Tuesday, and they were thus, remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison.

The PUNCH reported that residents had trooped out, last Wednesday, to protest what they described as indiscriminate disconnection and estimated billing, allegedly by the DisCo, and for the release of the arrested two.

4. Senate inaugurates probe panel on non-compliance with Petroleum Act, Oil Mining Lease

The President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan yesterday inaugurated an ad hoc Committee set up by the Senate to investigate the non-compliance with the Petroleum Industry Act and the Oil Mining Lease.

The seven-member panel is chaired by the Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi, APC, Niger North.

Other members of the Committee are: Senator George Sekibo, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, Senator Albert Akpan, Senator Solomon Adeola, Senator Smart Adeyemi and Senator Aishatu Dahiru

Inaugurating the Committee, the Senate President tasked the members to see the assignment as another greater call to service, an investigation to right the wrongs and expose corruption.

5. NCC issues countermeasures against website scams on Microsoft Edge Browser

The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has issued an advisory for users to install trusted, up-to-date anti-virus software with an Internet security component and to customize News Feed in Microsoft Edge Browser.

It said the measures were part of the countermeasures to lessen the chances of falling for a malicious attack that has been discovered in the browser.

The NCC-CSIRT further advised users of the browser to practise safe Internet browsing habits and to refrain from clicking on links they are unsure of in the face of a malicious attack that has been rated as high in probability and potential damage to systems.

The advisory stated that the malicious advertising campaign, unearthed on the Microsoft Edge Browser News Feed, redirects victims to fraudulent tech support websites and that cybercriminals have resorted to posting bizarre, attention-grabbing stories or advertisements on the Edge news feed to entice users to click on them. The malicious advertisements appear legitimate but contain malware and/or other threats.

6. Why we’re decimating terrorists, bandits — FG

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says it is progressively decimating terrorists and insurgents in order to secure the country.

The Minister made this known in Calabar at a joint press conference with Cross River State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, during a ceremony to mark the 2022 World Tourism Day.

He said infrastructure and adequate security are necessary for tourism to thrive.

“I am bold to say here that in the last three months, even our worst critics will agree that the government has gotten the handle on security issues. In the area of insecurity, I want to assure you that the worst is over,” Alhaji Mohammed said.

The 2023 general elections is set to be significant in view of the evolving scenario that points towards the attainment of a new milestone in the nation’s political history. Adamawa State is set to go down in history as the first state in Nigeria to have a female governor in Aisha Dahiru Ahmad of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

9. How judge returned 15 out of 19 properties seized from govt official – ICPC

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) said anti-corruption agencies alone cannot win the war.

The Chairman, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye spoke on Tuesday in Abuja at a dialogue with stakeholders on Behavioural Change, National Ethics and Integrity Policy.

Owasanoye stated that funds recovered by the commission are paid into the coffers of the Federal Government.

The ICPC boss said the monies go into the ‘Recovery Account’ with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), NAN reports.

Owasanoye stressed that the commission has no powers over funds or assets recovered from corrupt people.

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there and it’s because there is a high level of cynicism. People do not believe anything righteous about the government.

10. Coalition accuses Keyamo of belittling SGF, Adamawa’s contributions to APC

A support group of All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Director of Public Affairs and Chief Spokesman of Tinubu/Shetima Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, of belittling efforts made by prominent Adamawa people and the state as a whole towards past successes of the party.

The group, Coalition of APC Support Groups, said in a statement Tuesday that this is not the season for Keyamo to downgrade the efforts of anyone or group but to appreciate all concerned and ginger them towards even greater efforts.

Adamawa State Coordinator of the Coalition, Khaleel Sajoh, said in a statement that it was inappropriate of Keyamo to have said that APC gave two Christians the office of the SGF from Adamawa State, yet the 2019 election was lost in the state.

The statement said sons and daughters from Adamawa State, “most especially former SGF Babachir Lawal and the current SGF, Boss Mustapha” were part of great successes of the APC in 2015 and 2019.
