1. 2023: IDPs won’t be disenfranchised, says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday said the estimated three million Internally Displaced Persons would participate in the 2023 general elections.

The commission added that measures to ensure all eligible Nigerians including the IDPs exercise their franchise at the next year’s polls have been put in place.

The Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated these in Abuja at the stakeholders validation meeting on the 2022 Revised Framework and Regulations for Voting by IDPs.

Yakubu explained that the revised framework had taken into consideration several developments since the last review and validation exercise in 2018.

He said, “The policy was to ensure that no eligible Nigerian is left out of the electoral process on account of displacement, disability or other circumstances that may limit citizens’ participation in the electoral process.

2. Court jails lawyer five years for drug trafficking

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, on Tuesday, sentenced a 26-year-old lawyer, Yetunde Sulaimon, to five years imprisonment, for drug trafficking.

Justice Daniel Osiagor handed down the sentence to the convict, who studied law from one of the Benin Republic universities,
after she pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and unlawful export of exported 1.10 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa.

Earlier, when the convict was arraigned, the prosecutor, Mr. Abu Ibrahim, had told the court that the convict, who resided around Aguda, Surulere area of Lagos, was arrested on July 18, 2022 at Export Shed of National Handling Company Limited, a Customs area/point of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, when she attempted to export the banned weed.

Abu also told the court that the convict involved one Benjamin Joel to commit the illegal act.

According to him, the offence committed contravened sections 21 (2)(d) and 11 (b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under 11 (b) of the same Act.

3. Debt: Hospital detains nursing mother for four months

A middle-aged nursing mother, identified as Mrs Chinenye Agu, is seeking help as the hospital where she put to bed has refused to release both her and the new born baby since May.

Agu, who hailed from Ezeagu in Enugu State, but resides at Afor-Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, said she had the baby through a caesarian operation at the Ifechukwu Hospital, Umuoji, Idemili South Local Government Area, in May.

She said they were initially charged N480,000 but has paid N340,000 remaining a balance of N140,000.

She lamented that their situation worsened because her husband, whose name she mentioned as Anthony Agu, had lost his means of livelihood as a commercial driver when his vehicle was stolen during the pregnancy.

According to her, the husband, who now does bus conductor, had been depositing his daily returns together with contributions from some good spirited individuals at the hospital, where they were able to pay N340,000 out of the initial N480,000 charged by the hospital.

4. ASUU Strike: FG considers review of lecturers’ salaries – Minister

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu has said the Federal Government is considering an upward review of the salary of tertiary institutions’ lecturers to 23.5 per cent.

The minister said salaries of professors would also be reviewed by 35 per cent.

Adamu disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja when he presented the position paper of the government during a meeting between the Federal Government, Vice-Chancellors and Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian public universities.

Adamu said that President Muhammadu Buhari had warned against signing agreements which the government would not be able to meet.

5. FG expresses concern over non-payment of death benefits

Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, has expressed worry over the failure of some insurance companies to pay death benefits of deceased civil servants in the past few years.

Dr. Yemi-Esan, stated this at a meeting with underwriters of Group Life Insurance Policy for federal civil servants in her office in Abuja on Tuesday.

She noted that while the federal government “is doing its best to improve the welfare of families of deceased workers through the prompt release of funds for the payment of death benefits, the underwriters and brokers are frustrating the efforts by their unserious attitude.”

A statement signed by Abdullahi Ahmed, Deputy Director, Communications, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, quoted Yemi-Esan s saying that the meeting was necessary to bridge the gap that exists between underwriters and brokers as it was unreasonable to continue doing the same thing repeatedly without achieving meaningful result.

6. How fake UN doctor was nabbed by police, Nat’l Hospital explains

The National Hospital, Abuja, has said contrary to reports, it was the police that arrested the fake UN doctor parading himself as a humanitarian aid worker in the country.

Recall that one Obiako Chukwuemeka who has been impersonating a medical doctor working with the United Nations as a humanitarian aid worker was said to have been identified by the National Hospital and taken to police where he was immediately detained.

Confirmation of the arrest of the fake doctor, the National Hospital, through its Public Relations Officer, Dr Tayo Haastrup, said contrary to reports, the fake medic was picked by the police when his activities were found to be suspicious.

“No, it was actually the police that arrested him”, he said, promising to provide Vanguard details of what transpired later.

7. Aspirants withdraw suits against APC Oyo candidates

The All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants in the last primary elections of the party in Oyo State have withdrawn suits against candidates of the party.

A statement by Oyo APC governorship candidate, Sen. Teslim Folarin, noted that aside Hon Bimbo Kolade, a Federal Commissioner at Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission(RMAFC), all Senatorial, House of Representatives and Oyo House of Assembly aspirants have withdrawn cases filed against candidates and the party.

Folarin maintained that the resolution of all legal disputes is an indication of the party’s readiness to win the 2023 elections.

8. I thought I’d die very young-Femi Kuti

Afrobeat artiste Femi Kutu has said that he thought that he’d die at a very young due to his reckless approach as a teenager.

The musician, son of legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, clocked 60 on June 16, 2022.

In an interview with Goldmyne TV, the Grammy Award nominee said he was surprised that he was still alive to celebrate his 60th birthday.

9. EFCC busts 40 suspected internet fraudsters in Lagos

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has again arrested alleged internet fraudsters in Lagos.

The Head of Media, Wilson Uwujaren, announced the operation in a statement on Tuesday.

The suspects were apprehended at different locations along the Lekki-Epe expressway.

They are Oyedokun Opeyemi Abdulrazaq, Olowofela Temidayo, Moses Ossai, Dada Samuel Abiodun, Francis Victor Oluwatobi, Ayobami Akanji, Osun Gbenga, Doroye Olumide Joseph, Ajayi Oluwaseyi Emmanuel, Olalekan Olaniyi Akonji,Oluwadare Samuel Olawale, Oloyede Olakunle.

10. Herdsmen collaborating with terrorists to execute common agenda – Gov Ortom tells USA

Governor, Samuel Ortom of Benue State has alleged that some Fulani herdsmen are operating in collaboration with terrorist groups to sustain their attacks on the state.

The governor made the allegation in an interview with Epoch Times TV in Washington, DC, United States of America, USA.

Ortom during the interview anchored by Douglas Burton, pointed out that from the information available to him, terrorists groups including the Boko Haram, ISIS, ISWAP and armed Fulani herdsmen are working for one agenda.

The governor emphasized that the terrorists were the same group of people operating under different names and causing havoc across Nigeria.

“They collaborate by providing arms to them and doing the same thing by killing. Just like the Bible says, a thief cometh not only to steal but to kill and to destroy. So I have seen this collaboration in all these groups, they are doing the same thing,” he said.
