According to a British technology research firm, cable.co.uk, titled “Worldwide mobile data pricing: The cost of 1GB of mobile data in 237 countries,” Malawi now has the cheapest data subscription on the continent ahead of Nigeria.
According to the data received and analyzed by the British tech firm, 5,603 mobile data plans across 237 countries were researched during the period spanning from July 5, 2023, to September 6, 2023.
This rank will, further, debunk, the claims by many Nigerians that Nigeria has the most expensive data subscription tariff compared to other countries in Africa.
In the data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Nigeria holds the seventh position globally for mobile phone usage and ranks eleventh in terms of internet accessibility.
Nigeria has experienced a rise in its data and internet usage in the last one year as well as affordable data purchase and easy accessibility to the internet, moving up from number six in Africa in 2022, to number two in countries with least expensive mobile data purchase.
The report outlined the average price for one gigabyte (GB) of mobile data in Nigeria stands at $0.39 (equivalent to N390 using the exchange rate of N1000/$).
Despite inflation and the expenses associated with conducting business online being on the rise, data subscription prices in Nigeria managed to maintain a competitive edge in terms of affordability compared other countries like Egypt and South Africa.

This, further, proved the nation’s position in the global rankings for the most affordable mobile data as the 31st position out of a total of 237 countries.
The NCC, on the other hand, highlighted technical and non-technical reasons for the rapid depletion of data by subscribers across the country.
