Malawi’s Vice President Missing, Govt Declares

Eko Hot Blog Reports that a military aircraft carrying Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima, has gone missing after failing to land yesterday morning.
According to a government statement, the plane, which took off shortly after 9:00 am local time (0700 GMT), was carrying 51-year-old Chilima and nine other passengers.

The statement read that “all efforts by aviation authorities to establish contact with the aircraft since it disappeared from radar have been unsuccessful.”
In response, President Lazarus Chakwera has directed regional and national forces to initiate an “immediate search and rescue operation to determine the aircraft’s location,” the statement added.
President Chakwera, who was scheduled to visit the Bahamas for a working trip, has cancelled his plans.
Recall that Chilima, In 2022, was stripped of his powers following his arrest and subsequent charges related to a bribery scandal involving a British-Malawian businessman.
However, last month, a Malawian court dropped the charges after Chilima made several court appearances.
