Mali Risk Disqualification From AFCON Tournament

With just days before the 2019 AFCON kicks off in Egypt, Mali are said to be at risk of being disqualified, a move that will prevent them from taking part in the competition.

According to a revelation by a top official of the world’s football governing body, the West African country faces a ban if the forthcoming congress holding this weekend does not conform to FIFA statutes.

Via his official Twitter handle, FIFA’s Director of Development for Africa and the Caribbean, Veron Mosengo-Omba, posted that an ultimatum is in place for the West African nation.

With the general meeting scheduled for Saturday, June 15, FIFA said anything other than amicable resolutions to the crisis plaguing the Malian Federation may lead to the country’s suspension at all levels.

“FIFA President Gianni Infantino is clear: if the GA of June 15 turns into a fiasco, the competent bodies of FIFA may suspend Mali. This sentiment is echoed by the president of CAF, Mali risks being suspended from the CAN, which begins on June 21…” he tweeted via his handle @OmbaVeron.

“Mali is a footballing nation and is more than just the few people who want to take the football of this country hostage…let girls and boys of this beautiful country play,” he added.
