A 56-year old man, Dahiru Inusa, has been apprehended by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps in Nassarawa state for allegedly chaining and dragging his 15-year old daughter on the streets of Lafia.
NSCDC boss, Mahmoud-Fari told newsmen on Friday that the suspect had been arrested on Wednesday at Bukan-Sidi area of Lafia, and had claimed his daughter had become wayward and refused to go to school. He (Dahiru) said his action was to discipline her.
While calling for more efforts in stemming the tide, Mr Mahmoud expressed worry over the increasing rate of child abuse across Nassarawa’s 13 local government areas.
He said, “This is a case of a father chaining and dragging his biological daughter on the street in the name of instilling disciple in her. We all must join hands to fight this menace in our society.
“Just yesterday (Thursday), we had the case of a 75-year old man who defiled a three-year old child.”
Mahmoud assured newsmen that the command would charge Dahiru with attempted murder and child abuse.
The father of 15 expressed remorse for his actions and said he only wanted what was best for her.
He said, “I was angered by the fact that some girls were influencing her negatively and it was the anger that pushed me into the mistake of putting her in chains. I was only trying to make her takw me to her friends and not to harm her. I am begging my daughter and the government to forgive me.”
