Man Cries Out Over Alleged Police Brutality

A middle-aged man simply identified as Henry on Wednesday raised alarm over threat to life by some police officers following his refusal to give them money as he drove through a security check point in Umunze, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He alleged that the two tyres of his vehicle were shot by one of the officers who accused him of disobeying total lockdown order in the state.

Recall that the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, had in a special broadcast over the weekend announced a total lockdown following the announcement of an index case of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state by the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

To this end the security operatives in the state were given directive to ensure that the lockdown is strictly adhered to.

The victim, who narrated his ordeal in a viral Facebook video clip, said he was on his way to the bank to withdraw money in a nearby bank in the area when he was stopped by the officers.

He said: “I was driving to a bank in Umunze to withdraw money for my family to cook with to cover the extended lockdown when the policemen stopped me.

“They asked where I was going to when there is no movement, I told them I was going to the get money for my family to eat, but they insisted I must give them something before I pass.

“I questioned the idea of giving them money to pass in this period of lockdown. They shot my two tyres and also threatened to kill me if I don’t comply

“Why is it only me they saw when the whole place, a market area was filled with people. I assure the officers that they must be exposed and punished,

“I am sitting inside my car as I video the incident for the world to see because I am afraid if I come out of the car, they will shoot me. What is really happening in this country.”

Reacting to the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Mohammed, said the Commissioner of Police, John Abang, has ordered for discreet investigation into the matter.

His words: “The Commissioner of Police is deeply saddened with the alleged incident and has ordered for discreet investigation into the matter.”
