Man Seeks Justice After Being Shot by Stray Police Bullet

Tunde Adeparusi, a security expert, has expressed his frustration over the lack of justice six years after being struck by a stray bullet allegedly fired by police officers in Lagos.

Ekohotblog reports that the incident happened on July 20, 2018, when Adeparusi was on his way to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The officers were reportedly chasing suspects near the airport tollgate when one of their bullets hit Adeparusi, injuring him as he waited to pay the toll. The bullet went through his car, leaving him bleeding.

Following the shooting, the former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, ordered the arrest of the four officers allegedly involved.

These officers, Inspectors Christian Offor and Kingsley Umeji, along with Sergeants David Eguavoen and Paul Ebo, were supposed to undergo investigation.

If the allegations were proven, they were to face a trial in front of the command’s provost. However, nothing has been done about the case since then.

Adeparusi recalled that after he was shot, the officers seemed to assume he was dead and attempted to cover up the incident by picking up the bullet shells.

Despite this, they left the scene quickly but fortunately, Adeparusi survived the ordeal, but he continues to live with lasting effects. The bullet caused impairment to his left ear and slightly affected his left eye.

He had to spend all his savings on medical treatment and even asked for help from friends and family.

Despite his efforts to seek justice, including petitioning the Inspector General of Police, nothing has come of the case. Adeparusi expressed how painful it is to realize that if he had died, there would have been no accountability for the officers.

The trauma from the incident still affects him deeply, and he worries about how his children would have been impacted had he not survived.

The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, has yet to respond to inquiries about the case, even after being contacted since Monday.
