Kent Police reported that they were called to Sally Port Gardens around 5:55 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, following reports of a man in his 40s suffering stab wounds.
The victim was transported to the hospital, where his condition is described as serious but stable.
Esan was arrested near his residence on Mooring Road, Rochester, at approximately 6:30 p.m. the same day.
He now faces charges of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He is set to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, July 25.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his shock and dismay over the incident.
He took to X on Wednesday to state, “I am shocked and appalled by the news that a soldier has been attacked in Kent. All our thoughts are with the soldier, his family, and our Armed Forces community, who serve to keep all of us safe. I wish him a swift recovery.”
Kent Police have not yet identified any motive behind the attack, but they do not currently believe it to be terror-related. The force is also considering the possibility that the incident may be linked to mental health issues.
