A delegation of four United officials, including chief executive Omar Berrada, travelled to Barcelona last Thursday.
However, sources within the club have emphasized that several high-profile meetings have taken place in the city because co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been there supporting Ineos Britannia’s America’s Cup sailing team in their competition against New Zealand.
Xavi, who has been out of work since leaving Barcelona in the summer, is considered an attractive option for United’s hierarchy.
During his time at the club, he led Barcelona to the La Liga title and is widely seen as one of the top coaches influenced by Pep Guardiola, under whom he played for four years.
Xavi’s availability could appeal to United’s decision-makers, who reportedly considered a managerial change over the summer but found few top-tier candidates on the market.
Having had time to reflect since his departure from Barcelona, Xavi may be open to a new challenge.
Ten Hag, who survived a summer review of his position, has endured a tough start to the new season. After overseeing United’s worst-ever Premier League season last year, the team continues to struggle, sitting in the bottom half of the table with many of last season’s issues still unresolved.
