Mango Founder, Isak Andic Dies In Tragic Hiking Accident Near Barcelona

Isak Andic, the billionaire founder of global fashion chain Mango, tragically passed away on Saturday in an accident while exploring caves near Barcelona.

The 71-year-old reportedly fell 150 meters into a ravine while hiking in the Montserrat mountains, a region known for its challenging cave systems.

Spanish media confirmed that Andic was accompanied by his son and other family members at the time of the accident, which triggered a large-scale emergency response, including a helicopter and a specialized mountain rescue unit.

Born in Turkey, Andic moved to Catalonia in the 1960s and launched Mango with his brother Nahman in Barcelona in 1984. Over the decades, the company grew into a global fashion powerhouse, operating nearly 3,000 stores across 120 countries. Forbes estimated Andic’s net worth at $4.5 billion (£3.6 billion).

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez paid tribute to Andic, calling him a visionary who turned Mango into a global fashion leader. “All my love and recognition for your great work and business vision,” Sánchez said.

Salvador Illa Roca, President of Catalonia’s government, expressed his condolences, describing Andic as a committed businessman who played a significant role in elevating Catalonia’s international reputation.

Mango CEO Toni Ruiz, in a heartfelt statement, said: “His departure leaves a huge void, but all of us are, in some way, his legacy. The best tribute we can make to Isak is to ensure Mango continues to be the project he aspired to and of which he would feel proud.”

Mango recorded a turnover of €3.1 billion (£2.6 billion) in 2023. The brand gained increased prominence in the UK after British model Kate Moss became its face in 2011.

Andic’s death also marks the end of a longstanding rivalry with fellow Spanish fashion mogul Amancio Ortega, founder of Zara. Both were considered giants in the global fashion industry, shaping the high-street retail landscape.

The Salnitre de Collbató caves, where the accident occurred, are a popular but challenging hiking destination within the Montserrat mountain range. Police received an emergency call at around 13:00 local time (12:00 GMT), but despite rescue efforts, Andic was pronounced dead at the scene.
