Mark Zuckerberg Criticises Apple Over Arbitrary Policies, Lack of Innovation

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has taken aim at Apple, accusing the tech giant of enforcing arbitrary rules, stifling innovation, and profiting at the expense of developers.

EKO HOT BLOG notes that speaking on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, Zuckerberg expressed his frustrations with Apple’s practices, including its developer ecosystem, restrictive device compatibility, and lack of recent groundbreaking products.

Zuckerberg acknowledged Apple’s revolutionary impact with the iPhone, describing it as a milestone in tech history. However, he argued that the company has failed to sustain its innovative momentum.

“Steve Jobs invented the iPhone, and now they’re just kind of sitting on it 20 years later,” Zuckerberg said. He also noted that consumer interest in new iPhone models has waned due to minimal year-over-year improvements, leading to slower upgrades and declining sales.

Zuckerberg criticised Apple’s 30% commission on app developers, labeling it a “tax” that stifles competition and innovation. He also highlighted Apple’s restrictive approach to third-party device integration, particularly in products like AirPods.

“They’ve hamstrung the ability for anyone else to build something that can connect to the iPhone in the same way,” Zuckerberg stated.

He argued that Apple’s policies are cloaked in concerns over privacy and security but maintained that better protocols could address these issues. “If they let other companies use their protocol, there would probably be much better competitors to AirPods out there,” he added.

Zuckerberg shared Meta’s struggles in integrating its Ray-Ban Metaglasses with Apple devices, citing Apple’s refusal to grant access to its proprietary connectivity protocols. He claimed Apple uses the lack of security in its own systems as an excuse to block competitors.

“It’s insecure because you didn’t build any security into it. And now you’re using that as a justification for why only your product can connect easily,” he argued.

Zuckerberg suggested that Apple’s policies directly hinder Meta’s growth. He asserted that if Apple removed its “random rules,” Meta’s profits could double.

The Meta CEO’s remarks add to growing criticism of Apple from developers and competitors, accusing the company of using its market dominance to enforce restrictive practices. Whether Apple will respond to these claims remains to be seen.
