Market women in Ughelli led protests against hunger, blocking the East-West Road, while protests continue in Abuja despite security measures.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in the early hours of Thursday, August 1, market women in Ughelli metropolis and nearby communities led ongoing protests, voicing their frustration over widespread hunger.

At Otovwodo Junction in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, they waved green leaves as a symbol of solidarity and dissatisfaction.

The demonstrators, numbering over two thousand, including women and youths, occupied the East-West Road, halting traffic and blocking travelers by barricading the major route.

Hon. Jaro Egbo, chairman of the Ughelli North local government council, urged the protesters to remain peaceful and avoid violence. He assured them that both state and federal governments are aware of their grievances and are working to address their demands.

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters have refused to back down despite gunshots and teargas fired by security operatives in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Naija News learned that a large number of protesters are currently marching on a major road in Kugbo, Asokoro, in Abuja Municipal Council Area (AMAC).

Recall that a Federal High Court in Abuja had restricted protesters to Moshood Abiola Stadium. However, some protesters proceeded to the stadium, while others assembled at various spots across the nation’s capital.
