Real Madrid forward, Kylian Mbappé, etched his name into club history on Wednesday, May 14, by surpassing a 71-year-old record previously held by football legend Alfredo Di Stéfano.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the French international became the highest-scoring debutant in La Liga for Real Madrid after netting his 28th goal in a tense 2-1 win over Mallorca, surpassing Di Stéfano’s 27-goal tally from the 1953-54 season.

Playing in his 32nd league appearance since joining from Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappé delivered a critical equaliser in the 68th minute after Los Blancos had fallen behind early in the match.

Mallorca opened the scoring through Martin Valjent in the 11th minute, putting the pressure on Carlo Ancelotti’s side. However, Mbappé stepped up to level the score before youngster Jacobo Ramon sealed the win deep into stoppage time (90+5′), keeping Real Madrid’s title hopes mathematically alive for another day.

With two matches left in the season, Mbappé could further extend his record, capping off what has been an extraordinary debut campaign in Spain.

Real Madrid, however, remain four points adrift of fierce rivals Barcelona, following a recent El Clásico loss that dealt a significant blow to their title challenge.

All eyes now turn to Barcelona’s Thursday night clash against city rivals Espanyol. A victory would confirm their status as La Liga champions, while a slip could offer Madrid a narrow path back into the race.
