Dr Onayiga reiterated that it was significant for women, whom she described as the home bearers, carers and ones who nurture the family, to prevent diseases based on the powers they wield through the provision of medicinal food and fruits in their various homes.
Beginning with common ears ailments, she pointed out that the impacted cerumen which blocks the ears compel mothers to frequent the hospital with their children to flush it out.
Speaking further, she disclosed that the use of cotton bud poked into the ears may not be safe enough in that it may not be sterile enough and may pick up a bacterial infection which could further impact the ear.
“The way to clean the ears is to be very careful, remain sterile all along. Ensure that you break each one of the two sides open and use one of the sides to clean the outer ear.
“You will always find dirt around the ear because it is an organ that continuously produces oily substances because of the sweat glands and the Servicios gland.
“The other side of the cutting bud is the one to take in and when you’re taking it in, please don’t go deeper, just go around the first outer inner ear very softly and gently,” she explained.
She noted that having inflammation or a boil on the external ear which is built on cartilaginous tissues is painful but can be relieved by the use of the local shea butter (ori) added with antibiotics. “Take a piece of panadol before going t the hospital if pains persist,” she added.
Dr Onayiga disclosed that onions red, brown and white, are immune boosters antifungal, and antibiotics as they are powerful to cure foot rots in between the legs. “Marsh up onions and cloves of garlic, make it into a paste and put it in between the legs while wearing a pair of socks to sleep for two days.
Also, she spoke about the otitis media where the eardrum is broken or when one goes swimming and water escapes in and gets infected. She made it known that antibiotics are needed to drain out the pores.
Concerning nose bleeding, an ailment common with children, especially during the harmattan, cracks the mucous membrane and splits around the tiny vessel.
This, she said, can be cured by the mint leaf (efinrin), by getting out the gel and apply into the nose while also raising the head backward. When the bleeding gets out of control with the cotton wool soaking up, parents are advised to see the doctors.
As for the throat, she explained that ailments such as tonsilitis, pharyngitis and the common cold, rhinitis which comes through there can be treated with home remedies.
She noted that the concoction that can be used to fight the diseases around the throat are immune boosters such as varieties of peppers, vegetables, onions, cinnamon and seafood. She also advised the change of diets to improve and boost the immune system to fight diseases.
As for the sore throat, Dr Onayiga explained that a concoction of pepper, garlic, onions and ginger are capable of curing throat infections while also stating that cold water should be avoided and that the voice should not be abused as such could hurt the throat.
She concluded by stressing the need to feed well which is potent enough to fight diseases.
“I think that the best thing to do is to eat well, when we eat well, we will begin to fight diseases well be able to fight disease well.
“I thank you for allowing me to let us know what our roles are as women to be to take care of our women and our husbands and to be able to let them live longer lives by what you give and prepare for them to eat,” she stated.
