Meet Abacha’s Strongman Who Escaped Obasanjo’s Massive Retirement Of Military Officers In 1999
- Many saw the retirement of these Senior Military Officers as a winch haunt by Obasanjo

- But Malu wasn’t retired by Obasanjo in 1999.
Lieutenant General Victor Malu (late) was among the very few top Military Officers who survived the massive retirement of Military Officers from service when Obasanjo became President in 1999.
The late Army Officer was the one who headed the trial Of Lieutenant General Oladipo Diya and co. in Jos, Plateau State in the early Months of 1998.
He was also the Country’s Chief of Army Staff during the first two years of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as President.
Malu was among the most respected Military Officers during his days in the Military. The Benue State born General will forever be remembered for three things.
His work as field Commander under the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group peacekeeping mission in Liberia, between 1996 and 1998.
Recall, Liberia suffered from bloody civil from the early 90s till late of the decade. The hardwork of people like him under the umbrella of ECOMOG had helped in subsiding one of Africa’s most devastating civil wars.
His appointment as head of the Special Military Tribunal for the trial of General Diya and co: In the early months of 1998, General Abacha tasked General Malu with the chairing of a Military Tribunal that will tried alleged coup plotters, they accused persons comprises of General Oladipo Diya, Abdulkareem Adisa, Tajudeen Olaruwanju among others.
His appointment as Chief of Army Staff by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999. When Obasanjo came on board as democratically elected President of Nigeria, he retired 65 senior Military Officers from service. Most of these Officers served in different capacities under Abacha.
Obasanjo didn’t retire General Malu, it won’t be unconnected with his selfless service to the nation. Obasanjo meritoriously appoint Malu as Chief of Army Staff. Malu spent two years in the position until his retirement in 2001.
General Malu died in April 2017 after a protracted illness. He was burried in his native Katsina Ala, Benue State.
