Meet Five Great Sons Of Akwa Ibom Who Lost Their Lives In A Space Of Three Weeks

Over the last four weeks, five Akwa Ibom natives have died.

They left behind footprints in sands of time

Air Commodore (Otuekong) Idongesit Nkanga

Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga was a native of Ikot Nya in Nsit Ibom local government area of Akwa Ibom state. He was born on 27 January, 1952 (68yrs). He was the military governor of Akwa Ibom state between September 1990 to January 1992 during General Babangida’s regime. He handed over to an elected civilian governor at the start of the Nigerian Third Republic.

On may 2001, Idongesit Nkanga was a member of the board of Cooperative Development Bank, in 2002 he contested as governor of Akwa Ibom state under National Democratic Party (NDP), in 2007. He was a strong supporter of Goodluck Johnathan, Godswill Akpabio and Udom Emmanuel. He died on 24th December, 2020 from complications of Covid-19.

Ubong Thompson King

Ubong King was a business coach, a motivational speaker, a security expert and a business consultant. He was the president of the UBONG KING FOUNDATION (UKF) which is a non profit and non governmental organization and it’s aimed at training and grooming young people towards leadership. He was the convener of the biggest youth empowerment conference in Africa, “THINKATION”, he was the CEO of Security Plus Limited.

Ubong King was born on 22nd August, 1972, he attended Federal Government College, Lagos, Lagos Business School and University of Calabar. He was married to Mrs. Unyime Ivy King, the marriage was blessed with four children. He died on 26th December, 2020 from the complications of Civid-19

Air Admiral Nsikak-Abasi Essien Eduok

Nsikak Eduok was born on 11 July, 1947 to the family of Essien Eduok in Ibesikpo Asutan local government area of Akwa Ibom state. Nsikak Eduok was the first Operations Officer of the Makurdi Strike Group, he was also the Commanding Officer of Nigerian Airforce Station, Enugu and the first Commander of the 75th Fighter Squadron.

Nsikak Eduok was the twelfth Chief of Air Staff in Nigeria. He hold a Honorary Doctorate Degree of Humanities from the prestigious Cornerstone University, Isreal. He was married with three children. He died on 6th January, 2021. He died of renal failure.

Architect Ime Okon Ekpo

Arc. Ime Okon was the general overseer of God’s Own Ministry Int’l, Uyo. He was a professional career civil servant from Ikot Okoro, Nsit Ubium local government area of Akwa Ibom state, he was born in August 1956.

Arc. Ime Okon was also the commissioner for Lands and Town Planning, he was once a Director from Ministry of Housing and Urban Renewal. He holds a Masters degree of science in architecture. He died of complications from Covid-19.

Obong Udo Ekpenyong

Udo Ekpenyong was born in 1957, he was from Ukanafun local government area of Akwa Ibom state.

Ekpenyong was a career politician who started making waves in the year 2000 when he was appointed as a Political Adviser to Obong Victor Attah when he was the governor, after then, when Godswill Akpabio came in as the governor, he was appointed a commissioner. Later on, in governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration, he was appointed the commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, then he was finally appointed the State Chairman of Akwa Ibom PDP, a position he held till death.

He was a top notch politician in the state. He was declared dead on 18th January, 2021 as a result of Covid-19 complications.
