EDITOR’S PICKS
Dr. Alausa, an accomplished physician at home and abroad, was born in Epe, Lagos State.
He is board-certified in Nephrology and specialises in Internal Medicine and Hypertension.
The physician obtained his first degree from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Medical School, Lagos, Nigeria, and received Specialist Training in Nephrology from the Medical College of Wisconsin, Wisconsin, US.
Tunji Alausa, the ministerial nominee, founded Kidney Care Center, a nephrology practice and Dialysis Care Center, a rapidly growing provider of boutique dialysis services in Illinois, US.
Dr. Tunji Alausa’s commitment to advancing the delivery of excellent care to patients living with chronic kidney disease is at the heart of his decision to establish kidney care centres.
He is at the forefront of the US Value-Based Care (VBC) initiative. The Value-Based Care model is a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovative (CMMI) model to enhance a framework for restructuring healthcare systems with the overarching goal of patient value.
The Nigerian Nephrologist has successfully treated conditions such as Chronic Kidney Disease, Kidney Stones, Kidney Transplant, and Glomerulus Disorder Dialysis.
Besides being successful on the treatment table, he has published multiple peer-reviewed medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine.
In 2007 and 2012, Dr. Alausa was named one of America’s Best Physicians.
In the past, Tunji Alausa from Lagos has embarked on medical missions to administer care to vulnerable Nigerians.
More specifically, Dr Alausa, an Eko Club International Medical mission member, has led several missions to Lagos State from the US.
Apart from his membership of the Eko Club International, an umbrella body for Lagos indigenes in the diaspora, he is a member of Lagosians of Chicago, an association of Lagos indigenes in Chicago, Illinois, US.
Before he was appointed minister, Dr Tunji Alausa was appointed to the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Presidential Policy Advisory Council on health reform and improvement of the healthcare sector in Nigeria towards the attainment of Universal Health Coverage.
Dr. Alausa, who may be Nigeria’s next Minister of Health, has undoubtedly proven himself to be up to steering one of the most critical ministries in the country.
Several people back at home in the Epe Division have excitedly received the news of his nomination. They expressed pride that a ministerial nominee has come from Epe for the first time in more than 22 years.
The last federal ministers to hail from Epe were Yomi Edu, former Minister of State, Special Duties (appointed in 1999) and Dapo Sarumi, who served as Minister for Information between June 1999 and January 2001 in the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
