In an interview with Goal, Rothen expressed disappointment in Messi’s attitude and performance, stating that the 35-year-old has failed to give his best for the club since joining last summer. Rothen added that Messi will leave PSG without having been able to revalue his salary, which was reportedly one of the key reasons why he joined the club.
“He came to PSG with tears and he will leave with the frustration of not having been able to revalue his salary,” Rothen said.
“It is a disappointment, another one. PSG has had a lot. I am extremely disappointed with his attitude, his performance and this information. I don’t care if he has 15 or 20 assists.”
Rothen’s comments come amid a series of disappointing results for PSG, who are currently top in Ligue 1.
The Paris-based club were eliminated from the Champions League at the round of 16 stage by Bayern Munich earlier in the season.
Messi joined PSG last summer after spending his entire professional career at Barcelona. The move reunited him with former teammate Neymar and saw him team up with fellow superstar Kylian Mbappe in a much-heralded attack.
However, despite scoring 25 goals and providing 14 assists in 42 appearances for PSG this season, Messi has struggled to replicate his best form in the biggest games.
