Messi Scores Brace As Inter Miami Win First MLS Supporters’ Shield

Lionel Messi, Inter Miami’s star forward, delivered a standout performance by scoring twice in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew, helping his team clinch their first-ever MLS Supporters’ Shield.

Messi opened the scoring with a well-taken close-range effort, and just before halftime, he dazzled the crowd with a stunning free-kick, extending Miami’s lead.

Columbus Crew’s winger, Diego Rossi, responded by pulling one back for the home side, but former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez restored Miami’s two-goal cushion. Despite a late penalty from Cucho Hernandez, Miami held firm to secure the win in Ohio.

This victory ensures Inter Miami will finish the regular season at the top of the standings, earning them the prestigious Supporters’ Shield for the first time since the club’s inception in 2020.

For Messi, the triumph marks the 46th trophy in his illustrious career, adding another piece of silverware to his legendary achievements.

Finishing in first place also grants Inter Miami home-field advantage throughout the post-season playoffs, positioning the team well for a deep playoff run.

“The first objective has been achieved and now we have to think about what’s next,” said Messi.

“The first round is three games but then it’s one game and anything can happen. But we have the great advantage of playing all the games at home, which is what we were looking for. We are very strong at home.”

Miami need two wins from their final two league matches to beat the MLS record for most points in a regular season, which currently stands as the 73 amassed by the New England Revolution in 2021.
