Lionel Messi has been the man of the moment for Barcelona time and time again. And he was once more, with the Catalan giants claiming a 4-1 win over newly-promoted Huesca in Monday Night La Liga action.
The Argentine superstar scored two goals while he provided an assist for Oscar Mingueza. France International Antoine Griezmann was the other scorer.
Messi’s goal tally in La Liga this season now stands at 21, three more than the next best scorer in former teammate and Atletico Madrid’s Luis Suarez. It is now 13 seasons in a row he has scored 20 or more goals, making him the only player in the competition’s history to achieve such a feat.
The 33-year-old Rosario native is also the only player in the Spanish top-flight to hit a double of goals and assists this season in all competitions (26 goals, 10 assists), alongside Griezmann (13 goals, 11 assists).
Another record Messi set on the night was making his 767 competitive for Barcelona, equaling the record of most appearances by Xavi Hernandez whom he shared a successful playing relationship with.
Barcelona’s victory takes them within four points of leaders Atletico Madrid who played out a goalless draw with Getafe on Saturday.
