Messi’s World Cup Hopes Alive As Argentina Beat Netherlands On Penalties

Messi’s world cup hopes are still alive after Argentina beat the Netherlands on penalties.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Argentina got the better of Netherlands on Friday in third World Cup quarter-final clash.

The South Americans dumped the Europeans in a penalty shootout that witnessed heroics from Aston Villa Goalkeeper, Emi Martinez, who saved two penalties.

Before the match went to a shootout, Argentina captain Lionel Messi superbly set up Nahuel Molina for their first-half opener. He then converted a penalty kick to put his side on course to face Croatia for a place in the final.

However, the Dutch had other ideas as they battled back to level. Wout Weghorst scored a header a few minutes to the 90-minute mark, sparking his side into life and he then forced an additional thirty minutes when he scrambled the ball home with only seconds left on the clock.

Neither side could find a winner, with Argentina the side to prevail on penalties, winning 4-3. They will face Croatia in the semi-finals after their shock shootout victory over Brazil.
