Meta has announced plans to construct a massive 50,000km (31,000-mile) undersea cable network, set to become the longest of its kind once completed.
Dubbed Project Waterworth, the initiative will connect key global regions, including the United States, India, South Africa, and Brazil, among others.

The tech giant—owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—has been expanding its influence beyond social media, investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure.
Meta stated that the new cable would deliver “industry-leading connectivity” across five continents and play a crucial role in supporting its AI-driven initiatives.
“This project will enable greater economic cooperation, facilitate digital inclusion, and open opportunities for technological development in these regions,” Meta wrote in a blog post.
The cable, designed with a 24-fiber-pair system, will offer unprecedented data capacity, according to the company.
Undersea cables are vital for global digital services and high-speed data transfers, with an estimated 95% of the world’s internet traffic relying on them.
According to telecommunications research firm TeleGeography, there are currently more than 600 publicly known subsea cable systems worldwide.
One of the largest, 2Africa, is backed by Meta and telecom giants like Orange, Vodafone, and China Mobile, spanning 45,000km and linking three continents.
