The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a stern warning to Ikeja and Eko Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos), cautioning them against disregarding its directive regarding meter replacements.
FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, reaffirmed on Wednesday that the commission’s directive to halt all replacement activities involving Unistar meters remains in force for both Ikeja and Eko DisCos, emphasizing that any attempt to proceed in violation of the order would lead to significant consequences.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Ijagwu clarified in a statement that recent rumors linking the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) approval of new meter prices to the proposed Unistar meter replacements by Ikeja and Eko DisCos are unfounded.
He highlighted that both FCCPC and NERC have invalidated the replacement plan, ensuring that no DisCo may proceed unless they fully comply with the NERC’s Order on Structured Replacement of Faulty and Obsolete End-user Customer Meters (Order No. NERC/246/2021).
Under this NERC directive, any meter replacement must be executed promptly, without disrupting consumers’ service, at no cost to the consumer, and without imposing estimated billing due to delayed installations.

This order is intended to protect consumers from unwarranted expenses and ensure a seamless replacement process.
Ijagwu urged consumers to report any attempts by Ikeja and Eko DisCos to bypass this directive. He reiterated that non-compliance by the DisCos would attract stringent penalties as stipulated by existing consumer protection laws.
“The FCCPC’s stance is clear: Ikeja and Eko DisCos must adhere to these directives or face severe penalties,” the statement continued, emphasizing the FCCPC’s commitment to protecting Nigerian consumers against unfair practices by service providers.
