Ciudad Victoria, on the US-Mexico border, reached a sweltering 47.4°C, breaking the 1998 record.

The intense heat caused hours-long blackouts and suspended classes in San Luis Potosi, which reached 50°C this week.

Mexico’s health ministry reported seven heat-related deaths between March 17 and May 4, a number that may rise after this week’s extreme heat.

Human-caused climate change and El Nino have driven global temperatures up, causing deadly heat waves.

The electricity system regulator issued alerts as demand exceeded supply in some areas.

Business chambers and analysts criticized the blackouts, citing inadequate investment in energy transmission and generation.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called the blackouts “exceptional” and assured sufficient generation capacity.

The heat wave comes amid a severe nationwide drought, worsening the water crisis and making water a key issue in June’s general elections.
