Mexico Mayor Assassinated Days After Taking Office
This senseless killing has sparked widespread outrage, with Guerrero State governor Evelyn Salgado expressing her indignation on social media.
The circumstances surrounding Arcos’ death remain unclear, but local reports suggest he was decapitated, although this has yet to be confirmed officially.
Arcos, who was elected in June, represented an opposition coalition including the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). The PRI has strongly condemned his killing, labeling it a “cowardly crime” and demanding justice.
“Enough of violence and impunity! The people of Guerrero do not deserve to live in fear,” the PRI stated on X.
His murder came just days after the killing of another city official, Francisco Tapia, according to PRI president Alejandro Moreno.
“They had been in office for less than a week. Young and honest officials who sought progress for their community,” Moreno said on X.
Mexico’s impoverished state of Guerrero has been ravaged by relentless violence, fueled by cartel turf wars over drug production and trafficking. The state, home to the once-glittering resort city of Acapulco, witnessed a staggering 1,890 murders last year alone.
Acapulco, formerly a haven for the wealthy and famous, now grapples with rampant crime, mirroring the state’s broader struggles.
Guerrero’s woes are part of a larger national crisis, which has seen: since Mexico’s government launched its military crackdown on drug trafficking in 2006.
Politicians, particularly at the local level, frequently fall victim to the bloodshed connected to corruption and the multibillion-dollar drug trade.
Tackling the cartel violence, which makes murder and kidnapping daily occurrences in Mexico, is among the major challenges facing Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president.
Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City, who was sworn in on 1st October, has pledged to adhere to her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s “hugs not bullets” strategy of using social policy to tackle crime at its roots.
She is set to unveil her security plan on Tuesday.
At least 24 politicians were murdered during a particularly violent electoral process leading up to the June election, which the key ruling party figure won by a landslide, according to official figures.
