Utah Governor Spencer Cox paid tribute to Love, describing her as a “true friend” and praising her dedication to public service. He said her legacy would continue to inspire those who knew her and many others across the nation.
Mia Love began her political journey in 2003 when she won a seat on the Saratoga Springs City Council. Her leadership skills and commitment to her community soon earned her the position of mayor. In 2012, she made her first attempt to enter Congress but narrowly lost to Democratic incumbent Jim Matheson. Undeterred, she ran again in 2014 and successfully defeated first-time candidate Doug Owens, making history as the first Black Republican woman to serve in the US House of Representatives.
During her time in Congress, Love became known for her conservative views, her advocacy for limited government, and her belief in personal responsibility. She often spoke about her parents’ journey to the United States with only $10 to their name and how their hard work and determination shaped her commitment to the American dream.
In a recent opinion piece published in the Deseret News, Love reflected on the values that guided her life. She emphasized the importance of unity, resilience, and hope, and expressed her wish for America to become a less divided nation. She also took the opportunity to thank her medical team and everyone who supported her through her illness.
“My parents taught me to love this country—warts and all. At its core, America is respectful, resilient, giving, and full of gritty determination,” she wrote.
Beyond politics, Love was also known for her dedication to her family and community. She was a role model for many, especially young women and people of color, proving that hard work and perseverance can break barriers.
