EKO HOT BLOG reports that the sock, famously worn during his “HIStory World Tour” concert in the southern French city of Nîmes in July 1997, was found discarded near the pop star’s dressing room by a technician after the event. Despite its worn condition, with visible stains and yellowing rhinestones, the sock drew intense interest from collectors and fans.
French auctioneer Aurore Illy described the item as “exceptional” and “cult,” especially for devoted Jackson fans. Initially valued between €3,000 and €4,000, the iconic sock sold for €7,688 (approximately $8,822) at the Nîmes auction house.
According to interencheres.com, Jackson wore the off-white, glittery sock while performing hits like “Billie Jean,” and the moment remains immortalized in concert footage from the tour.
The auction continues a trend of high-value sales for Michael Jackson memorabilia. In 2009, a Macau resort bought the glittery glove Jackson wore during his first televised moonwalk performance for $350,000. In 2023, the hat he wore before that same performance was sold for over $80,000 in Paris.
Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50 from a drug overdose, remains one of the most collectible artists in pop culture history. His fan base continues to grow globally despite long-standing controversies, including child molestation allegations which he and his estate have repeatedly denied.
