A midnight fire swept through a farmers’ market, locally known as “Oja Agbe,” at Moniya in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, destroying properties worth millions of naira.
The fire, which broke out around midnight, damaged several shops, containers, and kiosks before firefighters contained it.
Thanks to the timely intervention of the Oyo State Fire Service, the blaze was prevented from spreading to nearby residential areas.
The manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Akinyemi Akinyinka, confirmed that the agency received a distress call at 12:27 a.m. on December 2.
Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters led by ACFS Oyedeji discovered rows of shops engulfed in flames.
“We quickly acted to control the fire and stopped it from spreading to other shops and nearby properties,” Akinyinka stated.
Although the fire caused significant damage to property, no lives were lost. The quick response of the fire service saved many nearby shops and buildings from being affected.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was likely caused by electrical appliances left plugged in and unattended.
Akinyinka urged residents to exercise caution with fire, especially during the harmattan season when conditions make such incidents more likely.
“Always handle fire carefully to prevent accidents,” he advised, stressing the importance of unplugging electrical devices when not in use.
This incident highlights the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures to avoid similar disasters in the future.
