EKO HOT BLOG reports that Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal Football Club, has reportedly instructed the club to sign Real Sociedad’s 24-year-old midfielder, Martin Zubimendi, during the summer transfer window.
The Spanish footballer had rejected an opportunity to join Premier League leaders Manchester City in January, expressing his desire to finish the ongoing season with Real Sociedad. However, he is said to be open to moving to Arsenal in the summer.
According to reports, Real Sociedad has informed Arsenal that Zubimendi’s release clause is set at €60 million, which must be triggered if the transfer is to go through.
Despite this, Spanish media outlet Sport suggests that Arteta has asked Arsenal’s hierarchy to pursue the midfielder and sign him during the summer transfer window.
The North London club will face competition from Barcelona, who are also said to be interested in signing Zubimendi. The young midfielder has made 26 appearances for Real Sociedad across all competitions this season, impressing with his performances in the midfield.
Zubimendi’s possible arrival at Arsenal would be part of Arteta’s plans to revamp the squad during the summer transfer window.
Arsenal has struggled this season, with inconsistent performances leaving them out of contention for the Premier League title and facing the possibility of not qualifying for European competitions.
The Gunners have been linked with a number of midfielders in recent months, including Houssem Aouar from Lyon and Yves Bissouma from Brighton.
However, Zubimendi has now emerged as a top target for Arteta, who believes the player’s skillset and style of play could be an asset to Arsenal’s midfield.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will be able to match Real Sociedad’s valuation of Zubimendi, but with Arteta’s personal interest, the North London club will likely make a strong effort to secure the midfielder’s services.
