Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has shared the ‘severe punishment’ he faced after arriving late for a crucial Champions League match against Barcelona early in his Stamford Bridge career.
Mikel recounted the incident during a recent visit to Cobham Arena, Chelsea’s training ground, as part of The Obi One Podcast.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the former Super Eagles captain revealed that he was benched for three months as a consequence of his tardiness.
“I was late when I first joined the club. I think it was for a Champions League game against Barcelona,” Mikel recalled.
“The night before the game, we were training at Stamford Bridge. I was at home, just relaxing. It wasn’t like I overslept; I simply lost track of time.
“The consequences were immediate and harsh. When I finally arrived, the players didn’t say a word to me. I was sidelined for two to three months.
“For about two months, I didn’t play a single game. The punishment was severe, and I made sure never to be late again.”
During his time at Chelsea, Mikel made 372 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals.
