The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to private sector employers, urging them to strictly adhere to the N70,000 minimum wage.

Any deviation from this mandate will not be tolerated, the government has emphasized.

According to the FG, the new minimum wage is crucial in addressing the current economic challenges, and it is imperative that all Nigerian workers, regardless of employment sector, receive at least this amount.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, made this statement during the 13th Annual General Meeting of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria (EAPEAN) in Ikeja, Lagos.

Represented by the ministry’s Director of Employment and Wages, John Nyamali, Abubakar stressed that the minimum wage is now a legal requirement and that failure to comply could result in severe penalties. He urged private employment agencies to ensure that all workers under their contracts earn at least N70,000.

In response, the President of EAPEAN, Dr Olufemi Ogunlowo, called for clarification regarding whether the N70,000 minimum wage is net or gross. He highlighted the need to address any ambiguities in the minimum wage law.

Ogunlowo reaffirmed EAPEAN’s commitment to implementing the minimum wage and providing decent jobs for Nigerians. He emphasized that the association and its members are already adhering to the new wage standard.
