Missing Malawi VP: Rescue Team Finds Plane Wreckage

  • Malawi search teams discovered wreckage of plane carrying missing VP
  • Search team confirms no survivor has been found
  • Photos shared showed army personnel standing on a foggy slope

Eko Hot Blog reports that Malawian search teams have discovered the wreckage of a plane that was carrying the missing Vice President, Saulos Chilima.

A military source in Malawi disclosed this on Tuesday, a day after the aircraft went missing.

The military plane, which was transporting 51-year-old Chilima and nine others, vanished on Monday after failing to land in the northern city of Mzuzu due to poor visibility.

The aircraft was instructed to return to the capital, Lilongwe. Sadly, there were no survivors found among the wreckage.

Photos shared with AFP by a member of the military rescue team showed army personnel standing on a foggy slope near debris with the registration number of the Malawi Army Air Wing Dornier 228-202K aircraft.

President Lazarus Chakwera was expected to address the nation.

On Tuesday, rescuers had been searching a fog-covered forest south of Mzuzu, following the last communication from the plane before it disappeared.

Army commander General Paul Valentino Phiri earlier stated that neighboring countries had been assisting in the search efforts, providing helicopters and drones.

Among those on board was Malawi’s former first lady, Shanil Dzimbiri.

Chilima, who was first elected vice president in 2014, is a charismatic and stern-talking figure widely admired in Malawi, especially among the youth.

However, in 2022, during his second term, Chilima was stripped of his powers following his arrest and charges of corruption involving a bribery scandal with a British-Malawian businessman.
