Eating a well-balanced diet is also influenced by how you prepare your food; otherwise, you risk losing important nutrients that would otherwise be beneficial to your health. Certain foods can be cooked in a variety of ways to maintain their nutritional worth.

Our food must be cooked in order for our digestive system to absorb the nutrients. Eggs, for example, contain protein, but we must boil them to obtain the proteinaceous elements.

However, overcooking some foods can reduce the main nutrients our bodies need from them. Such nutrients are foods that contain minerals, fat-soluble vitamins, and water-soluble vitamins.

1. When it comes to vegetables, don’t boil them before adding them to your soup. If you use boiling water instead, you will lose a lot of vitamin C.

The same can be said about vegetable salads. When veggies are boiled before eating, half of their vitamin C content is lost. This is due to the presence of water-soluble vitamins in plants. When soaked in hot water, they are heat sensitive and can gradually permeate.

2. Meats especially red meat and pork, contain so much micro organisms which can be harmful to the health. Washing meat and cooking it properly is the only way to eliminate these organisms. Make sure you take time to cook your meat, before eventually frying them.

3. Microwaves are one of the most convenient cooking methods. It cuts down on the amount of time we spend cooking and helps us prevent overheating meals.

When you cook veggies in the microwave, though, some of the vitamin C is lost. Avoiding cooking with veggies through this method.

4. We can get omega-3 fatty acids from eating fish. However, when you fry fish, you lose a lot of the omega-3 fatty acid nutrients. Avoid frying fish, instead spice it up, and eat it.

5. Frying is another process of cooking that is good for foods like potatoes because it helps increase the level of fiber in them. It also maintains the vitamin B and vitamin C content in potatoes.

However, when oil goes through a lot of heat, it forms a poisonous substance that can lead to cancer. You can avoid this by using healthy groundnut oil and making sure you don’t overheat it while frying.
