Mixed Reactions As El-Rufai Vows To Sack More Workers

  • The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has said his administration will sack more workers specifically underqualified secondary school teachers across the state this year.

  • El-Rufai said this on Thursday during the weekly ministerial briefing organised by the Presidential media team.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the state governor regretted that some secondary school teachers only have primary school certificates but are teaching in public secondary schools.

He revealed that his government has hired more people than it has sacked in the last five years.

“We have hired over 40,000 civil servants in the last five years, most of them being nurses, midwives and teachers,” the Governor explained.

He said at the time of the briefing, 7,700 qualified secondary school teachers have been employed and would be deployed once he is done purging secondary schools of underqualified teachers.

The former FCT Minister explained that his overarching goal is to raise the standard of the public schools in Kaduna; one he can be confident enough to send his son to.

He, however, revealed that although his son was enrolled in a public school, he reverted to homeschooling due to threats of kidnapping which may put other children at risk.

Recall that Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria said the economy of Kaduna was traditionally built around textile factories and the public sector but in the decade before the administration of el-Rufai, the last four major textile factories were closed with many of the workers not receiving any terminal benefits despite two of the factories being mainly owned by the governments of the northern states.

The activist said rather than seeking to address this economic decline, el-Rufai has retrenched perhaps 60,000 public sector workers and many have not received their due payments.

The governor has, however, vowed to retrench more as a way of purging out unqualified workers in the state.
