On Thursday, 8th July 2021, the prestigious Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED), Noforija Epe, honoured its recent batch of retirees in a befitting farewell ceremony.
In attendance were the Provost, Associate Professor Nosiru Onibon, the Deputy Provost, Dr SA Shittu, the College Registrar, Mrs Omorinola George, the College Bursar, Mr Olutobi Bolukale and the College Librarian, Dr Abayomi Imam represented by Mr Adesanya. Others include Deans of Schools, Heads of departments, Heads of Programmes, Academic and Non-Academic members of Staff and students of the College.
Speaking in his opening remarks, the Provost, Associate Professor Nosiru Onibon welcomed the Guest Lecturer, Professor Rotimi Adebayo Animashaun, friends, families and well-wishers of the retirees.
“When the Dean informed me that they wanted to launch a book and organise a send forth for their retired lecturers, that brought together a two occasion in one, I quickly thought we could do this on the College level rather than the school level and the Dean accepted. So we summoned the ceremonies committee chairman. Dr Ojetunde and her members, you’re highly appreciated for this.”
“The school of Arts and Social Sciences sold the idea and that is what I always asked for, that we are not “an island” and we are no “Mr know it all”, we can also at a collective level bring out suggestions and this management is open to all laudable suggestions,” he said.
Professor Onibon recognized and congratulated the retirees one after the other. They include; Mr Ogunniyi Joseph (Deputy Provost), Mr Shittu Bola (Registrar), Mr Adegbola Adetunji, Mr Asoga Allen Kayode, Dr Popoola Sulaimon, Dr Oyetade Eunice, Dr Ibrahim TL, Mrs Ajiboye Esther, Mrs Adegbuyi Ruphina and Mrs Adelaja Tawa.
The provost showered encomiums on his close ally, the former Deputy Provost whom he described as one of the best hands anyone can work with because he possesses local, national and international experiences to move the college forward. His positive spirit, trustworthiness and reliability, he said, was contagious. If given another chance to choose, he would be selected.
The program also featured Citation of the Guest Speaker rendered by Dr Odunola Oshodi, a former Acting Deputy Provost of the College, after which the retirement lecture tagged “Transition and Adjustment: Life after Retirement” was delivered by Professor Rotimi Adebayo Animashaun from the Department of Guidance and Counselling, University of Ibadan.
After the retirees were invited to carry out the symbolic pens down and signing out exercise, Dr Popoola SA, a former director of Degree Programs and Part-Time Studies, in his response on behalf of the retirees, appreciated the enlightening lecture delivered by the Guest Lecturer, Professor Animashaun and thereafter enjoined his fellow retirees to draw lessons from the retirement lecture. He also suggested that similar lectures should be organised for members of staff of the college annually or bi-annually and not only during retirement ceremonies.
The second part of the send forth ceremony, Book Launch, was anchored by Dr Adebayo AA, Dean, School of Arts and Social Sciences, who read the citation of one of the authors of the book, Dr Popoola SA. The Management, DEANS, Heads of Departments, and the entire gathering made sizable financial contributions to the launch. The book titled “New and Emerging Perspectives ion Science, Religion and Society, a Festschrift in Honour of Dr Sulaiman Akorede Popoola” was thereafter reviewed.
