LWC and USAID officials at the meeting
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), has received a significant boost from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in improving access to potable water supply in the state.
Recall that on December 8, 2021, USAID and the Lagos government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services.
Consequently, on June 22, 2022, USAID visited LWC to partner with the corporation for a holistic WASH sector revitalisation to improve water supply access.
At the time, it was revealed that USAID was financing the revitalisation efforts with $40 million to support infrastructure rehabilitation, capacity building, institutional strengthening, and improvement in governance, among others.

On Tuesday, a USAID team visited the LWC Headquarters, Water House, Ijora, Lagos, to unveil Chemonics as a contractor to improve water supply in the state.
According to a statement signed by LWC’s Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Anifowoshe Rasaq, the USAID-sponsored project will also include support in the improvement of the governance and regulatory framework in Lagos State.
Speaking during the visit, LWC’s Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Muminu Adekunle Badmus said the corporation aims to improve access to potable water supply in the state.
He also stated that it was a great pleasure working with the USAID team for the project’s success, as water supply availability is vital.
“We need to look for benefits and values from this project, as many people are expected to enjoy improved service delivery,” Badmus said.

On his part, the USAID team representative, Dr Joechim Ezeji, listed the project objectives to include improving water service, revamping water infrastructure, transforming LWC, improving governance regulation and boosting service provisions in Lagos.
Ezeji noted that Lagos has all ingredients to succeed, as there is the presence of manpower, resourceful administration, and high political will, amongst others.
He, however, sought the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure success.
“USAID is ready to give direction through a capable and committed team,” the USAID official added.
