Shannon’s journey took a devastating turn when, just 18 months after undergoing a gastric sleeve operation, she fell seriously ill. According to her father, she struggled to keep any food down following the surgery, and the constant vomiting even led to her teeth rotting. Shannon’s life ultimately ended in Altnagelvin Hospital, with her cause of death attributed to “malnutrition due to gastric sleeve.”

This heartbreaking incident sheds light on the risks associated with seeking weight-loss surgery overseas. Prof David Kerrigan, one of the UK’s leading bariatric surgeons, warns that individuals traveling abroad for such procedures are taking a “massive risk.” In the UK, patients undergo a thorough preparatory process, including psychological assessments, and benefit from a comprehensive after-care program.

A March report revealed that seven British patients who had weight-loss surgery in Turkey died following their operations, and others returned home with severe health complications. While in 2019, the Department of Health considered establishing Northern Ireland’s first dedicated weight-loss surgery unit, progress on this front has stalled.

Dr. Nicola Herron, a Derry-based GP, expressed deep concern about the growing trend of individuals seeking surgery abroad. She emphasized that healthcare professionals in Northern Ireland often struggle to provide adequate care for patients who have undergone major surgery overseas, as this is a highly specialized field.

Many people underestimate the seriousness of weight-loss surgery, assuming it’s merely a matter of paying for and scheduling the procedure. However, as Shannon Meenan Browse’s tragic story illustrates, the reality is far more complex and fraught with risks.
