EKO HOT BLOG reports that a man, Sulieman Abubakar, has been sentenced to 21-months in prison by the Dei-dei Grade I Area Court in Abuja for stealing an Mp3 speaker worth N5,000. The court also found Abubakar guilty of criminal trespass and housebreaking.
During the trial, the prosecutor, Mr Olanipekun Babajide, told the court that on February 5th, the complainant, Abdulrahman Myheiminu of Dawaki, Abuja, reported the matter at the Zuba police station.
He said the convict trespassed into the complainant’s house and broke his window worth N80,000 before stealing the Mp3 speaker.
Babajide said that during police investigations, the 28-year-old scavenger made a confessional statement admitting to the crime. He also told the court that Abubakar was not a first-time offender.
In his ruling, the Area Court Judge, Malam Saminu Suleiman, sentenced Abubakar to 21 months in prison, with an option of paying a N30,000 fine.
The convict pleaded guilty to the charges and begged the court for leniency. The judge, however, said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who may be considering similar crimes.
The offence committed by Abubakar contravened the provisions of sections 348, 346, and 288 of the Penal Code. The judge advised Abubakar to use his time in prison to reflect on his actions and turn a new leaf upon his release.
