Eko Hot Blog reports that the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has revealed that he has been threatened after linking powerful and influential Nigerians to illegal mining.
According to the minister, threats have trailed his comment at the National Assembly about the involvement of highly-placed Nigerians in illegal mining.
However, the Minister said he remained undaunted despite these threats adding that many individuals have already known about it for some time.
In order to curb the trend of illegal mining, Alake said the government is employing both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies and tactics.
“The federal government is working closely with all critical stakeholders at state and local government levels, as well as host communities, to put a stop to activities carried out by illegal miners.”
The Minister also emphasized how important it was to involve host communities because they have efficient knowledge of their local terrain, which is crucial when developing effective security strategies.
Alake’s appointment as the Minister of Solid Minerals Development was seen as a move to address the challenges in the mining sector, including indiscriminate and illegal mining activities.
The President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has also warned that his administration will no longer tolerate criminal adventurers in the mining sector.
However, illegal mining activities have been a major challenge in the sector, leading to revenue losses and environmental degradation.
