Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with charges of corruption during his tenure, EKO HOT BLOG has learnt.
Reports suggest that Bello arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, accompanied by his successor, Usman Ododo.
Bello, who had been declared wanted over allegations of money laundering and embezzlement amounting to ₦80.2 billion, finally responded to the EFCC’s invitation. His arrival was marked by the presence of several influential politicians and All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders.
Insiders suggest that his appearance followed high-level discussions aimed at facilitating a smooth process for the former governor.
In a statement from his media office, Bello confirmed he had consulted with his family, legal advisors, and political allies before deciding to honour the EFCC’s invitation, stating confidently that he has “nothing to hide.”
This marks a significant turn of events for Bello, who had previously resisted multiple invitations from the anti-graft agency, resulting in a standoff at his Abuja residence.
Photos of the former governor at the EFCC headquarters have surfaced on social media.
Meanwhile, sources speaking to Sahara Reporters claim that the EFCC is under significant pressure to release Bello following his interrogation. Allegedly, the former governor had been evading arrest by staying at the Kogi State House and its liaison office in Abuja.
One source suggested, “Bello’s release is likely, with the EFCC leadership citing the recent earth tremors in Abuja as part of the reason to avoid detention. There’s considerable pressure from several quarters, including the Inspector General of Police. Contrary to public reports, Bello’s Chief Security Officer, who was said to have obstructed his arrest, was never detained. Bello had been staying in hiding until today’s negotiated appearance, which involved talks between President Tinubu’s camp and Bello’s allies.”
