Eko Hot Blog reports that during the official inauguration of the new NAFDAC office complex at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport/NAHCO in Lagos, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), highlighted a concerning issue: more than 70 percent of food exports from Nigeria are being rejected abroad due to non-compliance with regulatory requirements in the importing countries.

Prof Adeyeye expressed her deep concern regarding the inadequate state of export trade facilitation for regulated products leaving the country.

She pointed out that a visit to the NAFDAC Export warehouses within the international airport would shed light on the main reasons behind the continuous rejection of Nigerian exports overseas.

To address this issue, she emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration between NAFDAC and other government agencies operating at the ports.

The Director-General recognized that NAFDAC’s mandate, which is to safeguard public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of food, medicines, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, and packaged water, cannot be fully realized without an effective presence of NAFDAC at the ports and land borders.

She applauded the Nigeria Customs Service for their efforts and stressed the significance of collaboration between Customs and NAFDAC.

Prof Adeyeye acknowledged that NAFDAC is a complex organization that requires coordinated efforts with other agencies, such as the police, Department of State Services, Interpol, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to tackle issues involving unscrupulous stakeholders.

Over 70 percent of products leaving Nigerian ports are being rejected, resulting in significant financial losses for exporters and the country as a whole. The involvement of the police is crucial for NAFDAC’s investigation and enforcement activities, which is why over 80 policemen work alongside NAFDAC to provide assistance during raids and investigations.
