EKO HOT BLOG reports that there was pandemonium today in the capital city of Oyo State, Ibadan, after some officers of the Nigerian Army reportedly fired gunshots at one of the youths protesting the fuel and naira notes scarcity in the city.
The development has reportedly caused tension in the city as residents scamper for safety.
The protests on Friday and Saturday blocked the Iwo Road Interchange, a frontage of the State Secretariat at Agodi and other major roads in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The protest became more violent on Saturday, leading to a confrontation between the protesters and security agents in the Apata area.
Details of the chaos are still unclear but an eyewitness said: “If you live at Apata and its axis, kindly stay in your house and warn people not to come to Apata now, there’s a serious protest going on and at least one person has been shot dead by the security operatives.”
Another source told the press: “Everyone ran for their lives; some lay on the floor to prevent stray bullets.”
Many businesses have been grounded following the naira swap program by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as a means to easily take away from the public, the old N1000, N500 and N200 notes.
