The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) report no formal response from the government regarding their ongoing strike over unpaid salaries.
SSANU and NASU launched an indefinite strike on Monday, citing four months of unpaid salaries, which has effectively stalled university operations nationwide.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that SSANU National Vice-President Abdussobur Salaam confirmed to PUNCH Online on Tuesday that no significant progress has been made in addressing the strike.
While some informal contact was made between the Minister of State for Education and union executives, Salaam described it as “just an informal appeal” rather than a concrete step toward resolving the issue.
“This issue has persisted due to the government’s unfulfilled promises. Despite multiple ultimatums, we still haven’t received any payments,” Salaam explained.
“The recent communication was only a phone call. We need decisive action now; we’ve come too far to accept empty promises. If our payments aren’t made, we’ll continue this strike.”
A recent joint statement by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi confirmed that their final ultimatum for payment expired at midnight on Sunday.
The unions demand the payment of overdue salaries, enhanced allowances, earned benefits, and full implementation of a 2009 agreement with the government.
The government’s prior ‘No Work, No Pay’ stance has been applied to past strikes, including the prolonged 2022 strike by four university unions.
The unions issued a seven-day warning demanding outstanding payments and adherence to the August 2022 Memorandum of Understanding, which expired on October 27, 2024. A July 2024 ultimatum also went unanswered, despite threats of a complete university shutdown if demands were unmet.
